## Where Brampton asks for a certified translation

- Brampton is a city of Peel Region, in Ontario, north-west of Toronto. When a document is not in English or French, these are the offices that most often ask for a translation:

- IRCC, for permanent residence, Express Entry, study and work permits and citizenship, by online application
- The City Clerk’s Office at Brampton City Hall, for the marriage licence, by appointment or walk-in
- DriveTest centres, for the exchange of a foreign driver’s licence
- The Office of the Registrar General and ServiceOntario, for Ontario birth, marriage and death certificates
- The Ontario courts on Hurontario Street, Sheridan College and Algoma University, banks, employers and landlords

## IRCC, and the offices in Brampton with rules of their own

- For IRCC, a translation by a translator who is not certified in Canada is accepted when it comes with the translator’s affidavit, sworn before a notary public outside Canada, and a certified copy of the original. That is our IRCC translation.
- For the marriage licence, the City of Brampton asks that any identification not in English or French come with a translation certified by ATIO, presented with the original, and says the translator must be a Canadian certified translator who belongs to a translation association in Canada. A divorce granted outside Canada needs a Foreign Divorce Authorization from Ontario, which can take up to four weeks. For a foreign driver’s licence, Ontario accepts translations by foreign embassies and consulates and by qualified translators who show their credentials, dated within six months of the application.
- Roxo is not a member of ATIO, so for the marriage licence in Brampton you will need an ATIO-certified translator. For DriveTest and IRCC, our translation with the translator’s affidavit may be enough: check with the office before you order.

## Brazilians and Spanish speakers in Brampton

- Brampton had 343,690 immigrants in the 2021 census, 52.9% of its population, and 159,585 of them were born in India. Punjabi is the mother tongue of 141,005 residents, 21.7% of the city, followed by Gujarati and Urdu; 10,185 residents have Spanish as their mother tongue and 8,640 Portuguese. 385 immigrants were born in Brazil. The Consulate General of Brazil in Toronto serves the city.
- For a Canadian document going to Brazil, such as a birth or marriage certificate to be registered at a Brazilian registry office, the translation must be the Brazilian sworn translation (tradução juramentada), done by a sworn translator in Brazil. We provide that too.

## Did you know? Brampton

- Brampton was first known as Buffy’s Corners, and took the name of a town in Cumberland, England, when it was incorporated as a village in 1853, at the corner of Hurontario and Queen streets.
- Brampton has been a city of newcomers for a century: in the 1920s, nearly half of Canada’s cut flowers came from the Dale Estate greenhouses in Brampton, and the work drew immigrants, in particular skilled Dutch growers.
