## Where Gatineau asks for a certified translation

- Gatineau is the largest city in the Outaouais region of Quebec, across the Ottawa River from Ottawa. When a document is not in English or French, these are the offices that most often ask for a translation:

- IRCC, for permanent residence, Express Entry, study and work permits and citizenship, by online application
- The Gatineau courthouse (palais de justice), where a clerk of the Superior Court celebrates civil marriages, and the other authorized officiants
- SAAQ service centres, for the exchange of a foreign driver’s licence, even for people who work in Ottawa
- The Directeur de l’état civil, by mail or through a Services Québec office, for Quebec certificates and for inserting a birth or marriage from abroad into the Quebec register
- The MIFI (Quebec immigration ministry), Quebec courts, the Université du Québec en Outaouais, banks and employers on both sides of the river

## IRCC, and the offices in Gatineau with rules of their own

- For IRCC, a translation by a translator who is not certified in Canada is accepted when it comes with the translator’s affidavit, sworn before a notary public outside Canada, and a certified copy of the original. That is our IRCC translation.
- Gatineau is in Quebec, so its residents follow Quebec rules, not Ontario’s, and Quebec offices ask for more than IRCC. The SAAQ accepts the translation of a foreign driver’s licence only when it is done or authenticated by an embassy, a consulate or a member of OTTIAQ, of the Association of Legal Court Interpreters and Translators or of an association of the CTTIC. For a marriage, the officiant asks for an official translation by an OTTIAQ member, with the translator’s sworn statement, of any document not in French or English. To insert a birth or marriage from abroad into the Quebec register, the Directeur de l’état civil asks for a French translation by an OTTIAQ member, even of a document in English. A document already in French needs no translation.
- The MIFI, which issues the Quebec selection certificate (CSQ), accepts translations made in Canada only from members of OTTIAQ, ATIO, STIBC or CTINB or from the embassy or consulate of the issuing country, and translations made abroad from a translator who belongs to a professional order or is authorized to practise. Roxo is not a member of OTTIAQ, ATIO or any Canadian association, so our translation does not meet the SAAQ, marriage or civil status rules, and you should check with the MIFI before you order. For the federal IRCC steps, our affidavit is accepted.

## Brazilians and Spanish speakers in Gatineau

- In the 2021 census, 15.5% of the people of Gatineau came from immigration, a higher share than the Outaouais region as a whole (12.0%). Arabic is the non-official language most spoken at home in the Ottawa-Gatineau metropolitan area. The Embassy of Brazil is across the river in Ottawa, and the consular section of the Embassy of Mexico there serves Ottawa and Gatineau.
- For a Canadian document going to Brazil, such as a birth or marriage certificate to be registered at a Brazilian registry office, the translation must be the Brazilian sworn translation (tradução juramentada), done by a sworn translator in Brazil. We provide that too.

## Did you know? Gatineau

- Today’s Gatineau dates from 1 January 2002, when the cities of Aylmer, Buckingham, Gatineau, Hull and Masson-Angers were merged by the Quebec government. That is why older certificates and records from the area may name Hull or Aylmer as the place.
- The Canadian Museum of History stands in Gatineau, on the bank of the Ottawa River facing Parliament Hill, and has been there since 1989. The river is also the provincial border: crossing a bridge from Ottawa means moving from Ontario rules to Quebec rules.
