## Where Halifax asks for a certified translation

- Halifax is the capital of Nova Scotia. When a document is not in English or French, these are the offices that most often ask for a translation:

- IRCC, for permanent residence, Express Entry, study and work permits and citizenship, by online application, and the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP)
- Access Nova Scotia or a Deputy Issuer of Marriage Licences, for the marriage licence
- Access Nova Scotia and the Registry of Motor Vehicles, for the exchange of a foreign driver’s licence
- Vital Statistics, at Service Nova Scotia, for Nova Scotia birth, marriage and death certificates
- The Law Courts on Upper Water Street, Dalhousie University and Saint Mary’s University, banks, employers and landlords

## IRCC, and the offices in Halifax with rules of their own

- For IRCC, a translation by a translator who is not certified in Canada is accepted when it comes with the translator’s affidavit, sworn before a notary public outside Canada, and a certified copy of the original. That is our IRCC translation.
- Nova Scotia is stricter than most provinces. For a foreign driver’s licence not in English or French, Access Nova Scotia only accepts a translation by ATINS, CTTIC, the Immigrant Services Association of Nova Scotia (ISANS) or a consulate or embassy; a notary stamp is not needed, and an International Driving Permit does not count as a translation. The Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP) asks for a certified translator, with proof of the certification, and its guide does not offer an affidavit instead. Vital Statistics also asks, on its forms, for an official translation from a certified translator.
- For the driver’s licence, the list is closed and our translation is not on it. For the NSNP and Vital Statistics, check with them before you order: Roxo is not a member of ATINS. For IRCC, our translation with the affidavit is accepted.

## Brazilians and Spanish speakers in Halifax

- The Halifax Regional Municipality had 439,819 people in the 2021 census, and the metropolitan area 465,703. Immigration is recent: 18,135 immigrants arrived in the Halifax area between 2016 and 2021, almost twice the 9,510 of the previous five years, and 35.2% of Halifax’s immigrants came in that period. Across Nova Scotia, Arabic is the most common mother tongue other than English and French.
- For a Canadian document going to Brazil, such as a birth or marriage certificate to be registered at a Brazilian registry office, the translation must be the Brazilian sworn translation (tradução juramentada), done by a sworn translator in Brazil. We provide that too.

## Did you know? Halifax

- Nearly one million immigrants landed in Canada at Pier 21, on the Halifax waterfront, between 1928 and 1971. The building is now the Canadian Museum of Immigration, where many families look for the arrival records of their ancestors.
- Halifax is receiving newcomers faster than before: 18,135 recent immigrants settled in the Halifax area between 2016 and 2021, almost double the 9,510 of the five years before, according to the census.
