## Where Laval asks for a certified translation

- Laval is the third-largest city in Quebec, on Île Jésus, just north of Montreal. When a document is not in English or French, these are the offices that most often ask for a translation:

- IRCC, for permanent residence, Express Entry, study and work permits and citizenship, by online application
- The Laval courthouse (palais de justice), where a clerk of the Superior Court celebrates civil marriages, and the other authorized officiants
- SAAQ service centres, for the exchange of a foreign driver’s licence
- The Directeur de l’état civil, by mail or through the Services Québec offices in Montreal, for Quebec certificates and for inserting a birth or marriage from abroad into the Quebec register
- The MIFI (Quebec immigration ministry), Quebec courts, Montreal-area universities, banks and employers

## IRCC, and the offices in Laval with rules of their own

- For IRCC, a translation by a translator who is not certified in Canada is accepted when it comes with the translator’s affidavit, sworn before a notary public outside Canada, and a certified copy of the original. That is our IRCC translation.
- In Laval, as in the rest of the province, Quebec offices ask for more than IRCC. The SAAQ accepts the translation of a foreign driver’s licence only when it is done or authenticated by an embassy, a consulate or a member of OTTIAQ, of the Association of Legal Court Interpreters and Translators or of an association of the CTTIC. For a marriage, the officiant asks for an official translation by an OTTIAQ member, with the translator’s sworn statement, of any document not in French or English. To insert a birth or marriage from abroad into the Quebec register, the Directeur de l’état civil asks for a French translation by an OTTIAQ member, even of a document in English. A document already in French needs no translation.
- The MIFI, which issues the Quebec selection certificate (CSQ), accepts translations made in Canada only from members of OTTIAQ, ATIO, STIBC or CTINB or from the embassy or consulate of the issuing country, and translations made abroad from a translator who belongs to a professional order or is authorized to practise. Roxo is not a member of OTTIAQ or of any Canadian association, so our translation does not meet the SAAQ, marriage or civil status rules, and you should check with the MIFI before you order. For the federal IRCC steps, our affidavit is accepted.

## Brazilians and Spanish speakers in Laval

- Laval had 135,320 immigrants in the 2021 census, out of about 430,000 people in private households. Spanish is the non-official language most spoken at home in the Montreal metropolitan area, which includes Laval. The consulates general of Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Argentina that serve Laval residents are in Montreal, just across the Rivière des Prairies.
- For a Canadian document going to Brazil, such as a birth or marriage certificate to be registered at a Brazilian registry office, the translation must be the Brazilian sworn translation (tradução juramentada), done by a sworn translator in Brazil. We provide that too.

## Did you know? Laval

- Laval is a young city: it was created on 6 August 1965, when the municipalities of Île Jésus merged into one by an act of the Quebec legislature. One of the towns that disappeared that day, Ville-des-Îles-Laval, had existed only since 1941.
- After the island of Montreal, Laval is the region of Quebec with the highest share of immigrants: 31.5% of its residents in the 2021 census, more than twice the share of the province as a whole (14.6%).
