## Where Longueuil asks for a certified translation

- Longueuil is a city on the South Shore of Montreal, across the St. Lawrence River. When a document is not in English or French, these are the offices that most often ask for a translation:

- IRCC, for permanent residence, Express Entry, study and work permits and citizenship, by online application
- The Longueuil courthouse (palais de justice), on Jacques-Cartier Boulevard East, where a clerk of the Superior Court celebrates civil marriages, and the other authorized officiants
- SAAQ service centres, for the exchange of a foreign driver’s licence
- The Directeur de l’état civil, by mail or through the Services Québec offices in Montreal, for Quebec certificates and for inserting a birth or marriage from abroad into the Quebec register
- The MIFI (Quebec immigration ministry), Quebec courts, Montreal-area universities, banks and employers

## IRCC, and the offices in Longueuil with rules of their own

- For IRCC, a translation by a translator who is not certified in Canada is accepted when it comes with the translator’s affidavit, sworn before a notary public outside Canada, and a certified copy of the original. That is our IRCC translation.
- On the South Shore, as in the rest of the province, Quebec offices ask for more than IRCC. The SAAQ accepts the translation of a foreign driver’s licence only when it is done or authenticated by an embassy, a consulate or a member of OTTIAQ, of the Association of Legal Court Interpreters and Translators or of an association of the CTTIC. For a marriage, the officiant asks for an official translation by an OTTIAQ member, with the translator’s sworn statement, of any document not in French or English. To insert a birth or marriage from abroad into the Quebec register, the Directeur de l’état civil asks for a French translation by an OTTIAQ member, even of a document in English. A document already in French needs no translation.
- The MIFI, which issues the Quebec selection certificate (CSQ), accepts translations made in Canada only from members of OTTIAQ, ATIO, STIBC or CTINB or from the embassy or consulate of the issuing country, and translations made abroad from a translator who belongs to a professional order or is authorized to practise. Roxo is not a member of OTTIAQ or of any Canadian association, so our translation does not meet the SAAQ, marriage or civil status rules, and you should check with the MIFI before you order. For the federal IRCC steps, our affidavit is accepted.

## Brazilians and Spanish speakers in Longueuil

- In the 2021 census, 20.8% of the people of Longueuil were immigrants, and 22.7% across the agglomeration of Longueuil. Among immigrants admitted to the agglomeration between 2010 and 2019, the leading countries of birth were China, Morocco and Colombia. Spanish is the non-official language most spoken at home in the Montreal metropolitan area, and the consulates general of Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Argentina are in Montreal.
- For a Canadian document going to Brazil, such as a birth or marriage certificate to be registered at a Brazilian registry office, the translation must be the Brazilian sworn translation (tradução juramentada), done by a sworn translator in Brazil. We provide that too.

## Did you know? Longueuil

- Longueuil began in 1657, when Charles Le Moyne, a merchant from Ville-Marie (today’s Montreal), acquired the land that became the seigneury of Longueuil. By 1677 the seigneury covered roughly the territory of the present city.
- In 2002 Longueuil was merged with seven other South Shore towns, and in 2006 four of them became separate again. They still share an agglomeration, which includes Brossard, where nearly 40% of residents are immigrants.
