## Where Victoria asks for a certified translation

- Victoria is the capital of British Columbia. When a document is not in English or French, these are the offices that most often ask for a translation:

- IRCC, for permanent residence, Express Entry, study and work permits and citizenship, by online application
- Service BC offices and authorized marriage licence issuers, for the marriage licence
- ICBC driver licensing offices, for the exchange of a foreign driver’s licence
- The B. C. Vital Statistics Agency, for B. C. birth, marriage and death certificates and legal changes of name
- B. C. courts, the University of Victoria, banks, employers and landlords

## IRCC, and the offices in Victoria with rules of their own

- For IRCC, a translation by a translator who is not certified in Canada is accepted when it comes with the translator’s affidavit, sworn before a notary public outside Canada, and a certified copy of the original. That is our IRCC translation.
- Two B. C. offices have rules of their own. The Vital Statistics Agency may ask for certified translations of documents not in English when you apply for a legal change of name. ICBC, which exchanges foreign driver’s licences, decides by country whether a translation is needed: a licence from Brazil does not need one, while licences from Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile and Peru do, and the translation must come from an ICBC-approved translator or a consulate in B. C.
- Check with ICBC or the office that will receive your document before you order: ICBC works with translators it has approved, other B. C. offices may ask for a translator certified in B. C., and Roxo is not a member of STIBC.

## Brazilians and Spanish speakers in Victoria

- Victoria had 17,580 immigrants in the 2021 census, 20.0% of its population. Tagalog, Spanish, Mandarin and Cantonese are the most common non-official mother tongues, and 1,100 residents have Spanish as their mother tongue. 110 were born in Brazil and 245 in Mexico. Chile has an honorary consul in Victoria; the consulates general of Brazil and Mexico are in Vancouver.
- For a Canadian document going to Brazil, such as a birth or marriage certificate to be registered at a Brazilian registry office, the translation must be the Brazilian sworn translation (tradução juramentada), done by a sworn translator in Brazil. We provide that too.

## Did you know? Victoria

- As the capital, Victoria is where B. C. civil records are sent by mail: requests for B. C. birth, marriage and death certificates go to the Vital Statistics Agency at a Victoria post office box, though they can also be made online or at Service BC.
- Victoria speaks far more English at home than the mainland cities: 6.1% of residents speak a non-official language most often at home, against 35.0% in Burnaby and 34.9% in Surrey.
