## Chinese translation services for Simplified and Traditional

Chinese is written with characters, and there are two standard sets of them, while the spoken language has several varieties. A good translation into Chinese uses the characters of the place where the document will be used, and a translation from Chinese keeps names, dates and seals exactly as in the original.

- Characters: Simplified Chinese is used in mainland China and Singapore, and Traditional Chinese in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, so country is written 国 in one and 國 in the other.
- Speech: Mandarin is the official spoken language of mainland China and Taiwan and one of the official languages of Singapore, and Cantonese is spoken in Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong. Our Mandarin translation services cover documents written in standard Chinese, whatever the variety the person speaks.
- Names: the surname comes first, so in Wang Xiaoming the family name is Wang. Mainland passports spell names in pinyin, while Hong Kong and Taiwan use other romanizations, so the same surname 陈 can be Chen or Chan. The translation follows the spelling in the passport.
- Dates and numbers: dates are written year, month and day, as in 2026年10月3日, and large numbers are counted in units of ten thousand (万), so 5万 is 50,000.
- Documents: Chinese families keep a household register (hukou, 户口簿), adults carry a resident identity card (居民身份证), and birth, marriage and criminal record certificates are often issued by a notary office as notarial certificates (公证书). The translation reproduces every red seal, stamp and note.

## The history of the Chinese language

Chinese is one of the oldest written languages still in use. Its oldest texts are the oracle bone inscriptions of the Shang dynasty, carved more than 3,000 years ago. Each character stands for a syllable with a meaning, not for a single sound, which is why the same writing could be read across regions that spoke very differently.

In 221 BC, Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of a unified China, made one script the standard for the whole empire. Over the centuries, the speech of the imperial officials became a common language, and the English word mandarin came through Portuguese, from those officials. In the 20th century, the pronunciation of Beijing became the basis of the national standard, and in the 1950s mainland China introduced Simplified characters and the pinyin alphabet.

Today Chinese has more than a billion speakers, the largest number of any language as a mother tongue, and it is official in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore. It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations, and Chinese communities around the world keep it alive in Traditional and Simplified characters.
