## Dutch translation services for the Netherlands, Belgium and Suriname

Dutch is one language, with one official spelling, but the Dutch of the Netherlands, the Flemish of Belgium and the Dutch of Suriname differ in some words and expressions, and each country issues its documents in its own format. A good translation keeps every detail of the record and reads naturally to whoever receives it.

- Vocabulary: a cell phone is a mobiel in the Netherlands and a gsm in Flanders, and schoon means clean in the Netherlands but also beautiful in Flanders. Surinamese Dutch takes words from Sranan Tongo, the most common local language of Suriname.
- Names: in the Netherlands, prefixes such as van, de and van der are written in lowercase after the first name, as in Jan van der Berg, while in Belgium they usually keep the capital letter of the register, as in Jan Van der Berg. The letter pair ij is capitalized as one, as in IJsselmeer. The translation keeps each name exactly as in the original.
- Dates and numbers: dates are written day, month and year, so 03-10-2026 is October 3, 2026. Decimals use a comma and thousands a period, so 1.500,00 is one thousand five hundred.
- Documents from the Netherlands: the municipality (gemeente) issues the birth certificate (geboorteakte), the marriage certificate (huwelijksakte) and the extract from the population register (uittreksel BRP), and the certificate of conduct is the VOG (Verklaring Omtrent het Gedrag). The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.
- Documents from Belgium and Suriname: Belgian records are issued in Dutch, French or German, depending on the region of the municipality, and in Suriname the civil records come from the Central Office for Civil Affairs (Centraal Bureau voor Burgerzaken). We translate the language the document is written in.

## The history of the Dutch language

Dutch is a West Germanic language, like English and German, and grew out of the speech of the Franks who settled in the Low Countries. One of the oldest known sentences in it, Hebban olla vogala nestas hagunnan, which means all the birds have started their nests, was written around the year 1100. In the 13th century, the Flemish poet Jacob van Maerlant was already writing in Middle Dutch.

In the 17th century, the Dutch Republic became a great trading power. The States Bible (Statenbijbel), published in 1637, shaped the written language, and the Dutch East India Company, founded in 1602, took Dutch to Asia, the Caribbean and the Cape of Good Hope. Between 1630 and 1654, the Dutch held part of the Northeast of Brazil, from Recife, and New Amsterdam, today’s New York, left words such as cookie, boss and Santa Claus in American English.

Today Dutch has more than 20 million native speakers. The Netherlands and Belgium founded the Dutch Language Union (Nederlandse Taalunie) in 1980, Suriname joined it later, and the union keeps the common spelling. Afrikaans, spoken in South Africa and Namibia, grew out of the Dutch brought to the Cape, and Pennsylvania Dutch, despite its name, is a dialect of German.
