## Where European Portuguese is used and where your translation is accepted

European Portuguese is the standard of Portugal and, in general, the written reference in Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor. Brazil and Portugal are both parties to the Hague Apostille Convention. The destination decides the type of translation.

| Where | What you need |
|---|---|
| United States: USCIS, courts, universities and employers | [Certified translation](https://roxotranslations.com/us/certified-translation/) into English, with the signed statement of accuracy and notarization included |
| Portugal: registry offices, universities and public agencies | The receiving authority decides the format, for example whether it asks for an apostille or a local certification: we confirm it before quoting. See our [Hague apostille](https://roxotranslations.com/apostille/) page. |
| Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde and other countries that follow the European standard | The translation in European Portuguese, in the format the receiving authority asks for, with the options confirmed before quoting |

## What changes in European Portuguese translation

European and Brazilian Portuguese are the same language, but they differ in vocabulary, in forms of address, in the position of pronouns, in some verb constructions and, even after the 1990 Spelling Agreement, in a few spellings. A translation for Portugal follows the European standard from the first line to the last.

- Vocabulary: train is comboio in Portugal and trem in Brazil, bus is autocarro and ônibus, cell phone is telemóvel and celular.
- Forms of address: Portugal uses tu among family and friends and more formal forms with others, while Brazil uses você in most situations.
- Pronouns: Portugal usually places the pronoun after the verb, as in diz-me and dá-me, where Brazil says me diz and me dá.
- Constructions: Portugal says estou a fazer for I am doing, where Brazil says estou fazendo.
- Spelling: even after the 1990 Spelling Agreement, some words are still written differently, such as facto and fato, receção and recepção, António and Antônio.

## The history of European Portuguese

Portuguese grew out of the Latin spoken in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. In the Middle Ages it formed a single language with Galician, Galician-Portuguese. Portugal became a kingdom in 1143, and one of the oldest dated texts in Portuguese is the will of King Afonso II, from 1214.

Around 1290, King Dinis made Portuguese the language of royal documents and founded the first university in Portugal. In 1572, Luís de Camões published Os Lusíadas, the epic poem that shaped the literary language of Portugal, while the voyages of discovery took Portuguese to Africa and Asia.

After Brazil became independent in 1822, the two standards developed apart. Portugal reformed its spelling in 1911, and the two countries wrote differently for decades. The 1990 Spelling Agreement brought them closer, and Portugal completed the change in 2015, but European Portuguese keeps its own vocabulary and grammar.
