## French translation services for France, Canada and Africa

French is one language, but the French of France, of Quebec, of Belgium and Switzerland and of Africa differ in vocabulary, in some numbers and in the way documents are written. A good translation follows the variant of the country where the document will be used.

- Vocabulary: email is e-mail or mail in France and courriel in Quebec, and shopping is faire du shopping in France and magasiner in Quebec.
- Numbers: 70 and 90 are soixante-dix and quatre-vingt-dix in France and Canada, and septante and nonante in Belgium and Switzerland.
- Names: compound first names such as Jean-Pierre or Marie-Claire keep the hyphen, a married woman’s birth name appears as née, and the translation keeps every name exactly as in the original.
- Dates and numbers: dates are written day, month and year, so 03/10/2026 is October 3, decimals use a comma and thousands a space, so 1 500,00 is one thousand five hundred.
- Documents: a French birth record can be a full copy (copie intégrale) or an extract (extrait), families keep a livret de famille, and Quebec issues its own certificates. The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.

## The history of the French language

French grew out of the Latin spoken in Gaul, with words left by the Celtic Gauls and by the Germanic Franks who gave France its name. The oldest text in a form of French is the Oaths of Strasbourg, sworn in 842 by two grandsons of Charlemagne.

In 1539, the Ordinance of Villers-Cotterêts made French the language of the courts and of official documents in France. In 1635, Cardinal Richelieu founded the Académie française to look after the language, and in the following centuries French became the language of diplomacy in Europe. Explorers and colonists took it to North America, the Caribbean, Africa and the Pacific.

Today French has more than 300 million speakers on five continents, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the country with the most French speakers after France. It is one of the working languages of the United Nations and of the Olympic Games.
