## Where Hindi is spoken and where your translation is accepted

Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, is the official language of the Union government of India, which also uses English. In the 2011 census, more than 500 million people in India declared it their mother tongue, most of them in the north of the country, and it is also spoken in Nepal. In the 19th century, workers from India took Hindi and related languages to Fiji, Mauritius, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana, and today there are large communities in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and the Gulf countries. In the United States alone, more than 800,000 people speak Hindi at home. The destination decides the type of translation.

## Hindi translation services for India and the Indian diaspora

Hindi is one language, but it is written in its own script, it shares its everyday speech with Urdu, and Indian documents follow their own formats for names, numbers and records. A good translation keeps every detail of the original and reads naturally to whoever receives it.

- Script: Hindi is written in Devanagari, from left to right, with a line along the top of each word, and it has its own digits, such as १, २ and ३. Many Indian documents are bilingual, in Hindi and English, and the translation covers every line in Hindi, including stamps and handwritten notes.
- Hindi and Urdu: in speech they are very close, but Hindi is written in Devanagari and takes its formal words from Sanskrit, while Urdu is written in the Perso-Arabic script and takes them from Persian and Arabic. A book can be pustak or kitab in Hindi, and the translation follows the register of the original.
- Names: names are spelled in Latin letters in more than one way, so the same person can be Lakshmi or Laxmi, Sharma or Sarma, and some people have a single name, with no surname. The translation keeps the spelling of the passport when there is one, so tell us the form used in your other documents when you order.
- Dates and numbers: dates are written day, month and year, so 03/10/2026 is October 3, 2026. Large numbers are grouped in lakhs and crores, so 1,00,000 is one lakh, or 100,000, and 1,00,00,000 is one crore, or 10 million, and the translation reproduces each figure exactly.
- Documents: the birth certificate (janm praman patra), the marriage certificate (vivah praman patra), the Aadhaar card and affidavits on stamp paper are among the most common, issued by municipal and state offices, often in Hindi and English. The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.

## The history of the Hindi language

Hindi descends from Sanskrit, through the Prakrits and the Apabhramsha spoken in northern India during the first millennium, and its modern standard grew from Khari Boli, the speech of the region around Delhi. In the 13th and 14th centuries Amir Khusrau wrote verses in Hindavi, and in the following centuries poets such as Kabir and Tulsidas, who wrote the Ramcharitmanas in Awadhi, made the languages of northern India a language of literature.

The common speech of North India, known as Hindustani, spread as a language of trade and of the cities, and in the 19th century it settled into two written forms: Hindi, in Devanagari and closer to Sanskrit, and Urdu, in the Perso-Arabic script. On September 14, 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted Hindi in Devanagari as the official language of the Union, and the date is celebrated every year as Hindi Day (Hindi Divas).

In the 19th century, workers from India took Hindi and related languages, such as Bhojpuri and Awadhi, to Fiji, Mauritius, Suriname and the Caribbean, and in the 20th century new communities formed in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and the Gulf. Today more than 500 million people in India have Hindi as their mother tongue, and the records of those families are translated for immigration, study and work.
