## Where Italian is spoken and where your translation is accepted

Italian is the official language of Italy, San Marino and Vatican City, one of the national languages of Switzerland, spoken in Ticino and in part of Graubünden, and it has official status in parts of Slovenia and Croatia. It has more than 60 million native speakers and is an official language of the European Union. Emigration in the 19th and 20th centuries took Italian to the United States, Brazil, Argentina, Canada and Australia, where millions of descendants still need Italian records. The destination decides the type of translation.

## Italian translation services for Italy, Switzerland and citizenship

Italian is one language, but the Italian of Italy and of Switzerland differ in some words, and documents from Italy follow their own formats. A good translation follows the variant of the country where the document will be used and keeps every detail of the record.

- Vocabulary: Swiss Italian borrows from French and German, so a cell phone is cellulare in Italy and natel in Switzerland, and a driver’s license is patente in Italy and licenza di condurre in Switzerland.
- Names: in Italian civil records a married woman keeps her birth surname, and particles such as De, Di or D’ keep their spelling. An ancestor’s name can appear as Giuseppe in Italy and Joseph or José in the Americas, and the translation keeps each name exactly as in the original.
- Dates and numbers: dates are written day, month and year, so 03/10/2026 is October 3, decimals use a comma and thousands a period, so 1.500,00 is one thousand five hundred.
- Documents from Italy: a birth record can be a full copy (copia integrale), a summary extract (estratto per riassunto) or a certificate (certificato di nascita), and the comune also issues the family status certificate (stato di famiglia). The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.
- Documents for citizenship: birth, marriage and death certificates of the family line are translated into Italian. The consulate or comune defines the list and whether the apostille goes on the original first.

## The history of the Italian language

Italian grew out of the Latin spoken on the Italian peninsula, through the many local vernaculars that took its place after the fall of the Roman Empire. One of the oldest texts in an Italian vernacular is the Placito Capuano, from 960, a court record about the lands of the abbey of Monte Cassino.

In the 14th century, Dante Alighieri wrote the Divine Comedy in the vernacular of Florence, and Petrarch and Boccaccio followed him, so Tuscan became the model of written Italian. The Accademia della Crusca, founded in Florence in 1583, published its dictionary in 1612. When Italy was unified in 1861, Italian became the national language, even though most people still spoke local dialects at home.

Between the late 19th and the mid 20th century, millions of Italians emigrated, above all to the United States, Brazil and Argentina. Today Italian has more than 60 million native speakers, and the records of those families are still translated for citizenship, inheritance and genealogy.
