## Where Polish is spoken and where your translation is accepted

Polish is the official language of Poland and one of the official languages of the European Union, with more than 40 million speakers. It is also spoken by Polish minorities in Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine and the Czech Republic. Emigration took Polish to the United States, where Chicago became its best known center, to Canada and to Brazil, where Polish immigrants settled in Paraná from the 1870s, and, after Poland joined the European Union in 2004, to the United Kingdom, Ireland and Germany. The destination decides the type of translation.

## Polish translation services for Poland and the Polish diaspora

Polish is one language across Poland, but some regions use their own everyday words, and documents from Poland follow their own formats. A good translation keeps every letter of the original and reads naturally to whoever receives it.

- Letters: Polish is written in the Latin alphabet with letters such as ą, ć, ę, ł, ń, ó, ś, ź and ż, and Ł is a different letter from L. Systems abroad often drop the marks, so Łukasz becomes Lukasz and Łódź becomes Lodz, and the translation keeps every letter exactly as in the original.
- Names: many surnames change with gender, so a man is Kowalski and his wife or daughter is Kowalska, and the same goes for endings such as -cki and -cka. Polish also changes the ending of names inside a sentence, so Jan Kowalski can appear as Jana Kowalskiego. Tell us the spelling used in your US documents when you order.
- Regions: to say outside, people in Warsaw say na dworze and people in Kraków say na polu, and in Poznań potatoes are pyry instead of ziemniaki. In the north, Kashubian is recognized as a regional language.
- Dates and numbers: dates are written day, month and year with periods, so 03.10.2026 is October 3, 2026, and months often appear in words, as in 3 października 2026. Decimals use a comma and thousands a space, so 1 500,00 is one thousand five hundred.
- Documents: the birth certificate (akt urodzenia) can be a full copy (odpis zupełny), a short copy (odpis skrócony) or a multilingual extract (odpis wielojęzyczny), and the ID card (dowód osobisty) carries the PESEL number. The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.

## The history of the Polish language

Polish belongs to the West Slavic branch of the Slavic languages, together with Czech and Slovak. After Poland adopted Christianity in 966, Latin was for centuries the written language of the Church and the state, and the first Polish words appear as names in Latin records, such as the Bull of Gniezno, of 1136. The Book of Henryków, written around 1270, holds what is considered the oldest sentence written in Polish.

In the 16th century, writers such as Mikołaj Rej and Jan Kochanowski chose to write in Polish instead of Latin, and printing spread the language from Kraków. Between 1795 and 1918, Poland was divided among Russia, Prussia and Austria and disappeared from the map, and families kept the language alive at home and in schools until independence in 1918.

From the late 19th century, millions of Poles emigrated to the United States, Brazil and Canada, and after 2004 to the United Kingdom and Ireland. Today Polish has more than 40 million speakers, and the records of those families are still translated for immigration, citizenship and genealogy.
