## Where Shahmukhi Punjabi is used and where your translation is accepted

Shahmukhi is the way Punjabi is written in Pakistan: the Perso-Arabic alphabet, from right to left. It is the script of the province of Punjab, with cities such as Lahore, Faisalabad and Rawalpindi, while on the Indian side of the border the same language is written in Gurmukhi. More than 100 million people speak Punjabi, and large Pakistani communities live in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and the Gulf countries. The destination decides the type of translation.

## Punjabi Shahmukhi translation for documents from Pakistan

Shahmukhi and Gurmukhi Punjabi are the same spoken language, but they differ in script and in part of the vocabulary. In Pakistan, official documents usually come in Urdu and English, not in Punjabi, so we confirm the language of your document before quoting. A good translation keeps every name, date and note of the original and reads naturally to whoever receives it.

- Script: Shahmukhi uses the Perso-Arabic alphabet, written from right to left and usually in the Nastaliq style, like Urdu, with letters of its own such as ڑ and ݨ. Numbers can appear in Urdu digits (۱, ۲, ۳) or in Western digits. The translation marks any handwritten part that is illegible.
- Vocabulary: on the Pakistani side, Punjabi uses more words of Persian and Arabic origin, where Indian Punjabi often uses words of Sanskrit origin. Our translators know both, so a letter from Lahore and a letter from Amritsar are each read in their own register.
- Names: Pakistani names can be spelled in different ways in English, such as Muhammad or Mohammad, Hussain or Husain, and records show the father’s or husband’s name, as son of (s/o), daughter of (d/o) or wife of (w/o). Tell us the spelling used in your passport when you order.
- Dates and numbers: dates are written day, month and year, so 03/10/2026 is October 3, 2026, and religious documents can also carry the Hijri date. Large amounts are grouped in lakhs and crores, so 1,50,000 is one hundred fifty thousand, and the translation writes them in the format of the destination.
- Documents from Pakistan: the national identity card (CNIC) and the marriage contract (Nikah Nama) are issued in Urdu and English, while Shahmukhi Punjabi appears in letters, personal statements and family documents. We translate what is on the page, and the receiving authority defines whether the translation needs a certification, a notarization or the apostille on the original.

## The history of the Shahmukhi script

Shahmukhi means from the mouth of the king, a name that sets it beside Gurmukhi, from the mouth of the Guru. It grew out of the Perso-Arabic script that Persian, the language of the courts of the region, brought to the Punjab, adapted with extra letters for the sounds of Punjabi, such as the retroflex ڑ and ݨ.

For centuries it was the script of Punjabi Sufi poetry. Shah Hussain wrote his verses in Lahore in the 16th century, Bulleh Shah wrote his in the 17th and 18th centuries, and Waris Shah completed his version of the love story Heer Ranjha in 1766. These poems are still sung today, in Pakistan and in India.

In 1947 the partition of India divided the Punjab, and Shahmukhi became the Punjabi script of Pakistan, where Punjabi is the most spoken first language. Urdu and English remained the languages of the state, which is why official records seldom come in Punjabi. Today Pakistani families in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and the Gulf countries have their records translated every day.
