## Where Slovenian is spoken and where your translation is accepted

Slovenian is the official language of Slovenia and, since 2004, an official language of the European Union. It is also a recognized minority language in Italy, in the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, in Austria, in Carinthia and Styria, and in Hungary, along the Rába river, and it has more than 2 million speakers. Emigration took Slovenian to the United States, above all to Cleveland, Ohio, and to Argentina, Canada, Australia and Germany, where many families still need Slovenian records. The destination decides the type of translation.

## Slovenian translation services for Slovenia, Italy and Austria

Slovenian has many dialects, grouped in seven regional groups, but documents are written in the standard language, and records from Slovenia follow their own formats. A good translation follows the language of the original, keeps every letter of the names and reads naturally to whoever receives it.

- Letters: Slovenian uses a Latin alphabet of 25 letters, with č, š and ž and without q, w, x and y, and unlike Croatian it has no ć or đ. American documents often drop the marks, so Zupančič becomes Zupancic. The translation keeps every name exactly as in the original, so tell us the form used in your US documents when you order.
- Slovenian, Italian and Hungarian: in the bilingual towns of the coast, such as Koper and Piran, Italian is also official, and around Lendava, Hungarian, so some documents come in two languages and the translation covers both. Slovenian (slovenščina) is not the same as the language of Slovakia, although the names look alike, so tell us the country that issued the document.
- Names: a surname does not change with gender, so Janez Novak and Marija Novak share the same form. In running text names change their ending with grammatical case, so Janez Novak can appear as Janeza Novaka, and Slovenian even keeps a special form for exactly two people or things, the dual. The translation keeps the name as it is written in the identity fields of the original.
- Dates and numbers: dates use periods, often with spaces, so 3. 10. 2026 or 3. oktober 2026 is October 3, 2026, and some months have their own spelling, such as marec for March and avgust for August. Decimals use a comma and thousands a period, so 1.500,00 is one thousand five hundred.
- Documents from Slovenia: the birth certificate (rojstni list), the marriage certificate (poročni list), the certificate of citizenship (potrdilo o državljanstvu) and the ID card (osebna izkaznica), which carries the 13-digit personal registration number (EMŠO). The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.

## The history of the Slovenian language

Slovenian is a South Slavic language, brought to the Eastern Alps by the Slavs who settled there in the 6th century. Its oldest record is the Freising manuscripts (Brižinski spomeniki), written around the year 1000 and kept today in Munich. They are the oldest known text in a Slavic language written in the Latin alphabet.

In 1550 Primož Trubar published the first printed books in Slovenian, a catechism and a primer, the Catechismus and the Abecedarium. In 1584 Jurij Dalmatin published the whole Bible in Slovenian, and Adam Bohorič published the first grammar of the language. In the 19th century the poet France Prešeren gave Slovenian its great literature, and in the 1840s the old spelling gave way to the Latin alphabet with č, š and ž that is used today.

In Yugoslavia, Slovenian stayed the language of Slovenia, used in its schools, courts and press. After Slovenia became independent on June 25, 1991, Slovenian was confirmed as its official language, and a stanza of Prešeren’s poem Zdravljica became the national anthem. On May 1, 2004, when Slovenia joined the European Union, Slovenian became an official language of the Union. Today it has more than 2 million speakers, in Slovenia, in the neighboring countries and in the communities abroad.
