## Spanish translation services for Spain and Latin America

Spanish is one language, but the Spanish of Spain and the Spanish of Latin America differ in vocabulary, forms of address and the way documents are written, and each country has its own expressions. A good translation follows the variant of the country where the document will be used.

- Vocabulary: car is coche in Spain, carro in Mexico and Colombia and auto in Argentina; computer is ordenador in Spain and computadora in Latin America; cell phone is móvil and celular.
- Forms of address: Spain uses vosotros for "you all", Latin America uses ustedes, and Argentina and Uruguay use vos instead of tú.
- Names: most Spanish speakers carry two surnames, the father's first and then the mother's, and the translation keeps every name exactly as in the original.
- Dates and numbers: dates are written day, month and year, so 03/10/2026 is October 3. Spain uses a decimal comma, while Mexico and several other countries use a decimal point, as in English.
- Documents: a birth certificate is an acta de nacimiento in Mexico and a partida de nacimiento in other countries, and ID numbers go by names such as DNI, CURP or cédula. The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.

## The history of the Spanish language

Spanish grew out of the Latin spoken in Castile, in the north of the Iberian Peninsula, which is why it is also called Castilian. Some of its oldest written traces are the Glosas Emilianenses, notes in the margins of a Latin manuscript from around the 10th or 11th century.

In the 13th century, King Alfonso X made Castilian the language of royal documents and of science. In 1492, Antonio de Nebrija published the first grammar of the language, and in the same year Columbus reached the Americas, where Spanish spread across a continent. In 1605, Miguel de Cervantes published the first part of Don Quixote, the most famous novel in the language.

Today Spanish has nearly 500 million native speakers, more than any other language except Mandarin Chinese, and most of them live in Mexico. The Royal Spanish Academy, founded in 1713, works with 22 other academies of the language to keep a common standard.
