## Where Vietnamese is spoken and where your translation is accepted

Vietnamese is the official language of Vietnam and has more than 85 million speakers. After 1975, large communities formed abroad, and the United States is home to the largest one outside Vietnam: more than 1.5 million people speak Vietnamese at home, from Little Saigon in California to Houston in Texas. There are also large communities in France, Australia and Canada. Most Vietnamese documents we receive are needed in the United States, and the destination decides the type of translation.

| Where | What you need |
|---|---|
| United States: USCIS, courts, universities and employers | [Certified translation](https://roxotranslations.com/certified-translation/) into English, with the signed statement of accuracy and notarization included |
| Brazil: notary offices, universities and public agencies | [Sworn translation](https://roxotranslations.com/pt/traducao-juramentada/) into Portuguese, signed by a public sworn translator and valid nationwide. For Vietnamese, we confirm before quoting whether it goes through English |
| Vietnam, Canada, France, Australia and other countries | Ask the receiving authority which format it accepts: we tell you the options before quoting, including the [Hague apostille](https://roxotranslations.com/apostille/) when it applies |
| Consulates, embassies and immigration processes | The translation into the language the authority asks for, with the apostille on the original when it is required |

## Vietnamese translation services for the North and the South

Vietnamese is one language, but the North, around Hanoi, the Center, around Huế, and the South, around Ho Chi Minh City, differ in accent, in some tones and in everyday vocabulary. A good translation keeps every mark of the original and reads naturally to whoever receives it.

- Tones and letters: Vietnamese is written in the Latin alphabet, called quốc ngữ, with marks for six tones and letters such as ă, â, đ, ê, ô, ơ and ư. One mark changes the word: ma, má, mà, mả, mã and mạ are six different words, so the translation keeps every accent.
- North and South: a bowl is bát in the North and chén in the South, and pineapple is dứa in the North and thơm or khóm in the South. In the South, the hỏi and ngã tones sound alike.
- Names: the family name comes first, then the middle name and the given name, as in Nguyễn Văn An, and Nguyễn is the most common family name. American documents often reverse the order and drop the accents, as in An Van Nguyen. The translation keeps every name exactly as in the original, so tell us the form used in your US documents when you order.
- Dates and numbers: dates are written day, month and year, often in words, so ngày 03 tháng 10 năm 2026 is October 3, 2026. Decimals use a comma and thousands a period, so 1.500,00 is one thousand five hundred.
- Documents: the birth certificate (Giấy khai sinh), the marriage certificate (Giấy chứng nhận kết hôn) and the ID card (căn cước) follow national models, and older files may include the household registration book (sổ hộ khẩu). The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note, including the red seal of the issuing office.

## The history of the Vietnamese language

Vietnamese belongs to the Austroasiatic family, the same as Khmer, and took shape in the Red River delta, in the north of today’s Vietnam. A thousand years of Chinese rule, which ended in the 10th century, left a large vocabulary of Chinese origin, and for centuries Classical Chinese was the written language of the state. Vietnamese scholars then created chữ Nôm, a script built from Chinese characters, in which Nguyễn Du wrote The Tale of Kiều in the early 19th century.

In the 17th century, European missionaries, many of them Portuguese, began to write Vietnamese in the Latin alphabet, and in 1651 Alexandre de Rhodes published in Rome a dictionary of Vietnamese, Portuguese and Latin. That spelling, the quốc ngữ, spread under French rule, the last imperial exams in Chinese characters were held in 1919, and after 1945 it became the script of schools and of the state.

Today Vietnamese has more than 85 million speakers. It is the official language of Vietnam and one of the most spoken languages in American homes, carried by the communities that settled in the United States, France, Australia and Canada.
