A certified translator in the UK is a professional translator who signs a statement that the translation is accurate and shows their credentials. There is no official register: the Home Office does not approve translators, so what counts is the translator’s qualification and a statement that meets the rules.
No. Unlike Brazil or Spain, the UK has no sworn translators appointed by the state and no official list of certified translators. The Home Office does not approve, accredit or list translators or translation companies, so be wary of anyone who promises a ‘Home Office approved translator’.
Professional associations, such as the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) and the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI), admit translators who pass their assessments, and companies can join the Association of Translation Companies (ATC). Membership is a sign of quality, but the Immigration Rules do not require it. Roxo is not a member of these British associations: our credential is membership of the American Translators Association (ATA).
For leave to remain and indefinite leave to remain, the rules ask for the translation to be certified by a qualified translator and to show the translator’s credentials. The rules do not define the qualification: in practice, it is a professional translator who can show one, such as membership of a professional association, a translation degree or appointment as a sworn translator in another country.
The translator can be based anywhere: the rules do not require a translator in the UK, only a translation the Home Office can verify. Before you order, check that:
Each document goes to a translator native in the target language with experience of official documents, and then to a second translator, who checks names, dates and numbers against the original. Roxo signs the certified translation with the translator’s credentials, and the statement is notarised by a notary public in Florida at no extra cost.
Many of our clients in the UK come from Brazil, Portugal and Spanish-speaking countries. We translate from and into more than 30 languages, and for British documents going to Brazil we also provide the sworn translation (tradução juramentada) done by a Brazilian sworn translator.

No. The Home Office, the UK government department in charge of immigration, does not approve, accredit or list translators or translation companies, and the UK has no sworn translators appointed by the state. It sets the format: a dated statement of accuracy with the translator’s or company’s name, signature, contact details and, for leave to remain and ILR, the translator’s credentials. Be wary of anyone who promises a ‘Home Office approved translator’.
No. The UK Home Office has to be able to verify the translation independently, so it cannot be done by you or by a relative, even one who speaks both languages. The translation must come from a professional translator or a translation company.
Yes. We translate your documents into English and certify each translation with a signed statement of accuracy, the date, our contact details and the translator’s credentials, which is what the UK Home Office asks for. The translation can be done outside the UK: the rules do not require a British translator.
By people. Every document is translated by a professional linguist and goes through double human review for accuracy, grammar, formatting and consistency before delivery.
Our core languages are Portuguese, Spanish, English, Italian and French, and we work with many more, from Arabic and Chinese to German, Japanese and Russian. Tell us the language pair and we confirm availability before quoting.
