Arabic translation services for the Middle East and North Africa

Arabic is one written language with many spoken dialects. Official documents are written in Modern Standard Arabic in every Arab country, but names, dates and numbers follow local customs, and a good translation handles each of them with care.

  • Standard and dialects: Modern Standard Arabic is the language of documents, the press and schools, while the spoken dialects, Egyptian, Levantine (Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Palestine), Gulf and Maghrebi (Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia), change vocabulary and pronunciation and show up in letters, messages and recordings.
  • Script: Arabic is written from right to left, in 28 letters that change shape according to their place in the word, with no capital letters and usually without the short vowels. A translation into Arabic needs a right-to-left layout, and a translation from Arabic keeps the order of tables, stamps and signatures.
  • Names: the same name can be written in Latin letters in several ways, such as Mohammed, Muhammad or Mohamed, and full names often carry the father’s name with bin, ibn or bint. The translation keeps every name as it is in the original and, for the Latin spelling, uses the one you tell us when you order, such as the spelling in the passport, so every document of the same person matches.
  • Dates and numbers: many documents, especially from Saudi Arabia, carry the date in the Hijri (Islamic) calendar next to the Gregorian date, and the Middle East writes the Eastern Arabic numerals (٠١٢٣٤٥٦٧٨٩), while the Maghreb uses the same digits as English. The translation reproduces each date exactly as it is in the original.
  • Documents: a marriage is recorded in a marriage contract (aqd al-zawaj), the Emirates issue a family book (khulasat al-qaid), and civil records from Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia often come in Arabic and French. The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.

The history of the Arabic language

Arabic is a Semitic language, a relative of Hebrew and Aramaic, born in the Arabian Peninsula. One of the oldest inscriptions in Arabic is the Namara inscription, carved in 328 in the Syrian desert, and the Arabic alphabet grew out of the script of the Nabataeans, the people of Petra.

In the 7th century, the Quran fixed the classical form of the language, and in the following centuries Arabic spread to North Africa, the Iberian Peninsula and Central Asia. In Baghdad, scholars translated into Arabic the works of Greek, Persian and Indian science, and it was through Arabic that Europe learned the numerals and the zero from India. English words such as sugar, coffee, algebra and zero came through Arabic.

Today Arabic has more than 300 million speakers in more than 20 countries. Since 1973 it has been one of the six official languages of the United Nations, and Modern Standard Arabic, the heir of classical Arabic, is the language of the press, of schools and of official documents across the Arab world.

Help Center

Turnaround, price, accepted documents and how to order: the most common questions are already answered in the Help Center, organized by topic.

Do you translate Arabic from the Middle East and North Africa?

Yes. We translate documents from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Morocco and the other Arab countries, to and from English, Portuguese, Spanish and other languages. For names, the Latin spelling is the one you tell us when you order, such as the spelling in the passport, and dates in the Hijri calendar are reproduced as they are in the original. Tell us the destination when you order.

A name is spelled differently from my passport. Can you change it?

The translation reproduces names exactly as they appear in the original document. If we made a typo, we fix it at no cost. If the original itself has a different spelling, tell us before we start and we will guide you on how to handle it.

Can you translate between two languages other than English, such as Italian to Portuguese?

Often yes, depending on the pair and the service. For certified translation we confirm translator availability. For sworn translation into Portuguese, some pairs require a two-step route through English. We tell you the option before quoting.

Is the translation done by people or by machine?

By people. Every document is translated by a professional linguist and goes through double human review for accuracy, grammar, formatting and consistency before delivery.

Can you do a sworn translation from any language into Portuguese?

It depends on the language pair, because a sworn translation requires a public translator registered for that language. For pairs without one, we can offer a two-step route: certified translation into English, then sworn translation from English into Portuguese. We confirm before quoting.

Which documents do you translate?

Birth, marriage and death certificates, divorce decrees, diplomas and transcripts, driver's licenses, passports and IDs, criminal records, bank and financial statements, medical and vaccination records, contracts, affidavits and court documents, among others. Send a photo and we confirm.
