French translation services for France, Canada and Africa

French is one language, but the French of France, of Quebec, of Belgium and Switzerland and of Africa differ in vocabulary, in some numbers and in the way documents are written. A good translation follows the variant of the country where the document will be used.

  • Vocabulary: email is e-mail or mail in France and courriel in Quebec, and shopping is faire du shopping in France and magasiner in Quebec.
  • Numbers: 70 and 90 are soixante-dix and quatre-vingt-dix in France and Canada, and septante and nonante in Belgium and Switzerland.
  • Names: compound first names such as Jean-Pierre or Marie-Claire keep the hyphen, a married woman’s birth name appears as née, and the translation keeps every name exactly as in the original.
  • Dates and numbers: dates are written day, month and year, so 03/10/2026 is October 3, decimals use a comma and thousands a space, so 1 500,00 is one thousand five hundred.
  • Documents: a French birth record can be a full copy (copie intégrale) or an extract (extrait), families keep a livret de famille, and Quebec issues its own certificates. The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.

The history of the French language

French grew out of the Latin spoken in Gaul, with words left by the Celtic Gauls and by the Germanic Franks who gave France its name. The oldest text in a form of French is the Oaths of Strasbourg, sworn in 842 by two grandsons of Charlemagne.

In 1539, the Ordinance of Villers-Cotterêts made French the language of the courts and of official documents in France. In 1635, Cardinal Richelieu founded the Académie française to look after the language, and in the following centuries French became the language of diplomacy in Europe. Explorers and colonists took it to North America, the Caribbean, Africa and the Pacific.

Today French has more than 300 million speakers on five continents, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the country with the most French speakers after France. It is one of the working languages of the United Nations and of the Olympic Games.

Help Center

Turnaround, price, accepted documents and how to order: the most common questions are already answered in the Help Center, organized by topic.

Do you translate French from France, Canada and Africa?

Yes. We translate documents from France, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, Haiti and the French-speaking countries of Africa, to and from English, Portuguese, Spanish and other languages, and we follow the variant of the country where the translation will be used. Tell us the destination when you order.

Can you translate between two languages other than English, such as Italian to Portuguese?

Often yes, depending on the pair and the service. For certified translation we confirm translator availability. For sworn translation into Portuguese, some pairs require a two-step route through English. We tell you the option before quoting.

Is the translation done by people or by machine?

By people. Every document is translated by a professional linguist and goes through double human review for accuracy, grammar, formatting and consistency before delivery.

Can you do a sworn translation from any language into Portuguese?

It depends on the language pair, because a sworn translation requires a public translator registered for that language. For pairs without one, we can offer a two-step route: certified translation into English, then sworn translation from English into Portuguese. We confirm before quoting.

Which documents do you translate?

Birth, marriage and death certificates, divorce decrees, diplomas and transcripts, driver's licenses, passports and IDs, criminal records, bank and financial statements, medical and vaccination records, contracts, affidavits and court documents, among others. Send a photo and we confirm.

Which languages do you translate?

Our core languages are Portuguese, Spanish, English, Italian and French, and we work with many more, from Arabic and Chinese to German, Japanese and Russian. Tell us the language pair and we confirm availability before quoting.
