What is a certified translator?

In the United States there is no government license for translators. A translation becomes "certified" when the translator, or the translation company, attaches a signed statement that it is complete and accurate and that the translator is fluent in both languages.

The best-known credential is ATA certification, granted by the American Translators Association after an exam for each language pair. It shows the translator's level, but USCIS does not require it: what the agency asks for is the full translation with the signed certification.

Certified translator for USCIS
