Where your English translation for Ireland is accepted

Ireland has two official languages. Under the Constitution, Irish (Gaeilge) is the first official language and English the second, but English is the language of daily life and of most documents: birth and marriage certificates, school records, bank statements and court papers. Irish English is the English spoken in Ireland, not the Irish language: translating from or into Irish (Gaeilge) is a different service, with its own page. For immigration and citizenship, the rules are set by Immigration Service Delivery (ISD), and the format depends on where and how the application is made.

Irish English: what changes in the translation

Irish English, also called Hiberno-English, follows British spelling, but it has its own vocabulary and expressions, and Irish documents have their own names, numbers and offices. A translation into English for Ireland follows these conventions, and a translation of an Irish document keeps every term as it was issued.

  • Spelling: Irish English follows British spelling and writes colour, centre, organisation and licence, where American English writes color, center, organization and license.
  • Vocabulary: Irish English has words and expressions of its own, many shaped by the Irish language: grand means fine, a press is a cupboard, and I’m after signing it means I have just signed it. The translation renders them by meaning, not word by word.
  • Dates and numbers: Ireland writes dates day, month and year, so 03/10/2026 is 3 October, not March 10 as in the United States. Amounts are in euro, and Ireland writes 1,500.00, with a comma for thousands and a point for decimals.
  • Names: Irish names often carry the prefixes Ó, Mac or Ní and the accent called the fada, as in Seán or Siobhán, and some people use both an English and an Irish form of their name. The translation keeps every name exactly as in the original, accents included.
  • Documents: in Ireland, birth, marriage and death certificates are issued by the General Register Office, many records carry the PPS number (Personal Public Service Number), addresses carry an Eircode, and some documents bring English and Irish side by side. The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.

The history of English in Ireland

English arrived in Ireland with the Anglo-Norman invasion of 1169, but for centuries most of the island spoke Irish. In 1366, the Statutes of Kilkenny tried to stop the English settlers from adopting the Irish language and Irish customs, a sign of how strong Irish remained.

English spread with the plantations of the 16th and 17th centuries, with the national schools opened in 1831, which taught in English, and with the Great Famine of 1845 to 1852, which hit the Irish-speaking regions hardest and was followed by mass emigration. By the end of the 19th century, English was the language of most of the country, and it kept words, sounds and grammar from Irish.

Irish writers made Irish English known around the world: Jonathan Swift, Oscar Wilde, James Joyce, and four winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature, W. B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, Samuel Beckett and Seamus Heaney. The Constitution of 1937 made Irish the first official language and English the second, and today English is the everyday language of most people in Ireland.

Do you translate American and British English?

Yes. We translate documents into English and from English, with more than 30 languages, and we follow the variant of the country where the translation will be used: American English for the United States and British English for the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and other countries. Tell us the destination when you order.

Can I use a certified translation outside the United States?

It depends on the destination country and the receiving agency. Some accept a US certified translation, others require a local sworn translator or an apostille. Tell us the country and the institution, and we confirm which format it accepts before quoting.

What is a certified translation?

A certified translation is a complete translation signed by a qualified professional, with a statement attesting that it is accurate and complete. In the United States it is the format required by USCIS, courts, universities and most official institutions.

Is the translation done by people or by machine?

By people. Every document is translated by a professional linguist and goes through double human review for accuracy, grammar, formatting and consistency before delivery.

Which documents do you translate?

Birth, marriage and death certificates, divorce decrees, diplomas and transcripts, driver's licenses, passports and IDs, criminal records, bank and financial statements, medical and vaccination records, contracts, affidavits and court documents, among others. Send a photo and we confirm.

A name is spelled differently from my passport. Can you change it?

The translation reproduces names exactly as they appear in the original document. If we made a typo, we fix it at no cost. If the original itself has a different spelling, tell us before we start and we will guide you on how to handle it.
