British English Translation

Roxo Translations offers British English translation for documents that will be used in the United Kingdom, and for British documents that need to be translated into Portuguese, Spanish or another of our more than 30 languages. Every translation is done by a human translator, native in the target language, and reviewed by a second one.

Where British English translation is accepted

British English is the English of the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Its spelling is also the model in Ireland and in much of the Commonwealth, including Australia, New Zealand, India and South Africa. A document translated for a British authority should read as British English, and a British document often has to be translated for use in another country, so the destination decides the type of translation.

What changes between British and American English

British and American English are the same language, but they differ in spelling, in vocabulary, in the way dates are written and in punctuation. A translation for the United Kingdom follows the British form, and a British document translated into another language keeps every British term and number exactly as it appears.

  • Spelling: British English writes organise, colour, centre, licence and cheque, where American English writes organize, color, center, license and check.
  • Vocabulary: a ZIP code is a postcode, a cell phone is a mobile, an apartment is a flat, a lawyer who handles documents is often a solicitor, and the local government is the council.
  • Dates: British English writes the day before the month, so 17/10/2026 is 17 October 2026, while American English writes the same date as 10/17/2026, October 17, 2026.
  • Quotation marks and punctuation: British texts often use single quotation marks, ‘like this’, and write Mr, Mrs and Dr without a full stop, while American texts use double quotation marks and write Mr., Mrs. and Dr.
  • Documents: British records carry their own terms, such as the National Insurance number, the register office that issues a birth certificate or the council tax bill. The translation keeps each term and reproduces every stamp, seal and note.

The history of British English

British English is the English that developed in Britain after the language arrived with the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes in the 5th century. The speech of London and the south of England became the base of the written standard, and William Caxton’s printing press, from the 1470s, helped fix the way words were spelled.

In 1755, Samuel Johnson published his dictionary in London, and its spellings, such as colour and centre, became the norm in Britain. In 1828, Noah Webster published his American dictionary, which simplified spellings to color and center. Much of the difference between British and American English today comes from these two dictionaries.

Trade and the British Empire took English to every continent. Today British English is the norm in the United Kingdom, and its spelling is the model in Ireland and in much of the Commonwealth, from Australia and New Zealand to India, Nigeria and South Africa.

Do you translate American and British English?

Yes. We translate documents into English and from English, with more than 30 languages, and we follow the variant of the country where the translation will be used: American English for the United States and British English for the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and other countries. Tell us the destination when you order.

Do you do sworn translations into English?

Yes, when a Brazilian agency or another country requires it. If the document is for a US agency such as USCIS, what you need is a certified translation, the format those agencies ask for. Tell us where you will submit it and we confirm before quoting.

What is a certified translation?

A certified translation is a complete translation signed by a qualified professional, with a statement attesting that it is accurate and complete. In the United States it is the format required by USCIS, courts, universities and most official institutions.

Is the translation done by people or by machine?

By people. Every document is translated by a professional linguist and goes through double human review for accuracy, grammar, formatting and consistency before delivery.

Which documents do you translate?

Birth, marriage and death certificates, divorce decrees, diplomas and transcripts, driver's licenses, passports and IDs, criminal records, bank and financial statements, medical and vaccination records, contracts, affidavits and court documents, among others. Send a photo and we confirm.

A name is spelled differently from my passport. Can you change it?

The translation reproduces names exactly as they appear in the original document. If we made a typo, we fix it at no cost. If the original itself has a different spelling, tell us before we start and we will guide you on how to handle it.
