Where Canadian English is used and where your translation is accepted

Canada has two official federal languages, English and French. Québec has a French-speaking majority, while English is the main language in most of the rest of the country, from the Atlantic provinces to Ontario, the Prairies, British Columbia and the North. A document in Canadian English can be needed in Canada, in Brazil or in any other country, and a document in another language often has to be translated into English for a Canadian authority, so the destination decides the type of translation.

Canadian English translation: British spelling, American words

Canadian English sits between the English of the United Kingdom and the English of the United States. It takes some spelling from each, has words of its own and writes dates in more than one way. A good translation follows Canadian usage when the document will be used in Canada.

  • Spelling: Canada writes colour, centre and cheque, as in British English, but uses -ize in words such as organize and realize, and writes tire, as in American English.
  • Vocabulary: Canadians call the one-dollar coin a loonie and the two-dollar coin a toonie, a winter hat is a toque, a restroom is a washroom, and an address carries a postal code, not a ZIP code.
  • Dates and numbers: Canadian documents write dates in more than one format, day first, month first or year first, as in 2026-10-03, so the translator checks each date against the rest of the document. English Canada writes 1,500.00, while French Canada writes 1 500,00.
  • Names: documents in English often carry a middle name and suffixes such as Jr. or III, while Brazilian and Hispanic names carry two or more surnames. The translation keeps every name exactly as in the original, in the same order.
  • Documents: in Canada, birth and marriage certificates are issued by the vital statistics office of each province or territory, and federal documents such as the passport are printed in English and French. The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.

The history of Canadian English

English reached what is now Canada with British fishermen, traders and settlers. After the American Revolution, tens of thousands of Loyalists who had supported the British Crown moved north in the 1780s to Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and what became Ontario, and their speech is the root of Canadian English. The name Canada itself comes from kanata, an Iroquoian word for village.

In the 19th century, immigrants from England, Scotland and Ireland arrived in large numbers, and British spelling took hold in schools and government, while trade and closeness to the United States brought American words. Confederation joined the first provinces into Canada in 1867, and the Official Languages Act of 1969 made English and French the official languages of the federal government.

In 1998, the Canadian Oxford Dictionary recorded Canadian English as a variety of its own, with its spelling and its words. Today English is the main language in most of Canada, and it lives side by side with French in federal documents, in Québec and in New Brunswick.

Do you translate American and British English?

Yes. We translate documents into English and from English, with more than 30 languages, and we follow the variant of the country where the translation will be used: American English for the United States and British English for the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and other countries. Tell us the destination when you order.

Do you do sworn translations into English?

Yes, when a Brazilian agency or another country requires it. If the document is for a US agency such as USCIS, what you need is a certified translation, the format those agencies ask for. Tell us where you will submit it and we confirm before quoting.

What is a certified translation?

A certified translation is a complete translation signed by a qualified professional, with a statement attesting that it is accurate and complete. In the United States it is the format required by USCIS, courts, universities and most official institutions.

Is the translation done by people or by machine?

By people. Every document is translated by a professional linguist and goes through double human review for accuracy, grammar, formatting and consistency before delivery.

Which documents do you translate?

Birth, marriage and death certificates, divorce decrees, diplomas and transcripts, driver's licenses, passports and IDs, criminal records, bank and financial statements, medical and vaccination records, contracts, affidavits and court documents, among others. Send a photo and we confirm.

A name is spelled differently from my passport. Can you change it?

The translation reproduces names exactly as they appear in the original document. If we made a typo, we fix it at no cost. If the original itself has a different spelling, tell us before we start and we will guide you on how to handle it.
