Certified Translator in Cork

A certified translator in Cork is a professional translator who signs a statement that the translation is accurate, with the date, their name and contact details, for Irish immigration, the courts, universities and the civil registration office. You do not need to visit an office: we translate online and send the certified translation by email.

Do you need a translator based in Cork?

No. For applications made in Ireland, Immigration Service Delivery asks for a full translation with the translator’s statement of accuracy, the date and the translator’s name, signature and contact details, and it does not ask for a translator in Cork or anywhere in Ireland. Ireland has no sworn translators and no official register, so be wary of anyone who promises a ‘Department of Justice approved translator’.

Cork trains translators too: University College Cork runs an MA in Translation Studies, with Portuguese among its languages, at its School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures together with the Department of Modern Irish.

Translation degrees and membership of a professional association are a sign of quality, but the immigration rules do not require them. Our credential is membership of the American Translators Association (ATA). For a visa applied for from outside Ireland, a translation made outside the EEA also needs an apostille from the country where it was made.

When an office in Cork asks for a notary

In Ireland, notaries public are appointed by the Chief Justice, on petition, and in practice they are solicitors. Affidavits and statutory declarations are sworn before a commissioner for oaths or a practising solicitor.

Cork is the only city outside Dublin where the Department of Foreign Affairs authenticates Irish documents with an apostille, so an Irish certificate going abroad can be apostilled in the city before it is translated.

Irish immigration does not ask for a notary for applications made in Ireland. Our statement of accuracy is signed before a notary public in Florida, USA, at no extra cost (see notarised translation); if an office in Cork asks for an Irish notary, check with them before you order.

Is there an official or sworn translator in Ireland?

No. Ireland has no sworn translators appointed by the State and no official register of translators, and Irish immigration does not approve or list translators or translation companies. What counts is a professional translator and a signed statement of accuracy with the date, the translator’s name and contact details. Be wary of anyone who promises a ‘Department of Justice approved translator’.

Can I translate my own documents for Irish immigration?

No. Irish immigration does not accept translations made by the applicant, and a translation made by a relative is not a good idea either: it has to come from a professional translator, who signs the statement of accuracy with their name and contact details.

What does Irish immigration require for translated documents?

For each document that is not in English or Irish, Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) and the Irish embassies ask for a full translation with a statement from the translator that it is accurate, the date, and the translator’s full name, signature and contact details. Translations made by the applicant are not accepted. For citizenship, the translation is uploaded with a copy of the original document. For a visa applied for from outside Ireland, a translation made outside the EEA must also be apostilled in the country where it was made.

Is the translation done by people or by machine?

By people. Every document is translated by a professional linguist and goes through double human review for accuracy, grammar, formatting and consistency before delivery.

How will I receive my translation? Can I print it?

You receive a non-editable PDF by email, with the certification, signatures and digital seals. You can print it freely. If you cannot open the file, we resend it on WhatsApp.
