Where Romanian is spoken and where your translation is accepted

Romanian is the official language of Romania and of Moldova, one of the official languages of the province of Vojvodina, in Serbia, and, since 2007, an official language of the European Union. It is also spoken by communities in Ukraine and Hungary, and it has more than 20 million speakers. Emigration took Romanian to the United States and Canada, and more recently to Italy, Spain, Germany and the United Kingdom, where many families need Romanian records translated. The destination decides the type of translation.

Romanian translation services for Romania, Moldova and the diaspora

Romanian is the same language in Romania and in Moldova, with the same written standard, but each country has its own words, its own records and its own history of alphabets. A good translation follows the language of the original, keeps every letter of the names and reads naturally to whoever receives it.

  • Letters: Romanian uses a Latin alphabet of 31 letters, with ă, â, î, ș and ț. The correct ș and ț have a comma below, and older systems print them with a cedilla (ş, ţ). Since the 1993 spelling reform, â is written inside words and î at the edges, so the same family can appear as Cîmpeanu in an old record and Câmpeanu in a new one. American documents often drop the marks, so Ștefănescu becomes Stefanescu. The translation keeps every name exactly as in the original, so tell us the form used in your US documents when you order.
  • Romania and Moldova: the language is one, but some everyday words change, so a tomato is roșie in Romania and often pomidor in Moldova. Records issued in Soviet Moldova may be in Russian or in Romanian written in the Cyrillic alphabet, which Moldova used until 1989. Tell us when you order and we confirm the options before quoting.
  • Names: many surnames end in -escu or -eanu, such as Popescu or Moldoveanu, and a surname does not change with gender, so Ion Popescu and Maria Popescu share the same form. In running text the article is attached to the end of words and names can take a case form, so Maria can appear as Mariei, and the translation keeps the name as it is written in the identity fields of the original.
  • Dates and numbers: the months come from Latin and are written in lowercase, so octombrie is October and decembrie is December, and dates use periods, so 03.10.2026 is October 3, 2026. Decimals use a comma and thousands a period, so 1.500,00 is one thousand five hundred.
  • Documents from Romania and Moldova: the birth certificate (certificat de naștere), the marriage certificate (certificat de căsătorie), the criminal record certificate (cazier judiciar) and the Romanian ID card (carte de identitate), which carries the personal numeric code (CNP). Moldovan ID cards (buletin de identitate) carry the personal number (IDNP). The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.

The history of the Romanian language

Romanian is a Romance language, born from the Latin spoken in the Roman province of Dacia, which the emperor Trajan conquered in 106. It is the main language of the eastern branch of the Romance family, and it kept many words close to Latin, while it took others from its Slavic, Greek, Hungarian and Turkish neighbors over the centuries.

The oldest surviving text in Romanian is the letter of Neacșu, written in 1521 in Câmpulung and sent to the mayor of Brașov, in the Cyrillic alphabet. In the 16th century, deacon Coresi printed some of the first books in Romanian in Brașov. For centuries the language was written in Cyrillic, and in the 1860s the Romanian principalities adopted the Latin alphabet. The Romanian Academy, founded in 1866, became the authority on the written standard, and the poet Mihai Eminescu helped shape the modern literary language in the 19th century.

In Soviet Moldova the language was called Moldovan and written in Cyrillic until 1989, when it returned to the Latin alphabet, a change still celebrated there on August 31 as the day of Our Language. In 2023 the Parliament of Moldova replaced the name Moldovan language with Romanian language in its laws. On January 1, 2007, when Romania joined the European Union, Romanian became an official language of the Union. Today Romanian has more than 20 million speakers, in Romania, in Moldova and in the communities abroad.

Do you translate Romanian from Romania and Moldova, including older Moldovan records?

We translate documents from Romania and Moldova, such as birth and marriage certificates, criminal record certificates (cazier judiciar) and ID cards, to and from English, Italian, Russian and other languages. Romanian is the same language in both countries, and the translation keeps every diacritic of the names as in the original. Records from Soviet Moldova may be in Russian or in Romanian written in Cyrillic: tell us when you order and we confirm the options before quoting.

A name is spelled differently from my passport. Can you change it?

The translation reproduces names exactly as they appear in the original document. If we made a typo, we fix it at no cost. If the original itself has a different spelling, tell us before we start and we will guide you on how to handle it.

Can you translate between two languages other than English, such as Italian to Portuguese?

Often yes, depending on the pair and the service. For certified translation we confirm translator availability. For sworn translation into Portuguese, some pairs require a two-step route through English. We tell you the option before quoting.

What is a certified translation?

A certified translation is a complete translation signed by a qualified professional, with a statement attesting that it is accurate and complete. In the United States it is the format required by USCIS, courts, universities and most official institutions.

Which documents do you translate?

Birth, marriage and death certificates, divorce decrees, diplomas and transcripts, driver's licenses, passports and IDs, criminal records, bank and financial statements, medical and vaccination records, contracts, affidavits and court documents, among others. Send a photo and we confirm.

Is the translation done by people or by machine?

By people. Every document is translated by a professional linguist and goes through double human review for accuracy, grammar, formatting and consistency before delivery.
