A certified translator in Galway is a professional translator who signs a statement that the translation is accurate, with the date, their name and contact details, for Irish immigration, the courts, universities and the civil registration office. You do not need to visit an office: we translate online and send the certified translation by email.
No. For applications made in Ireland, Immigration Service Delivery asks for a full translation with the translator’s statement of accuracy, the date and the translator’s name, signature and contact details, and it does not ask for a translator in Galway or anywhere in Ireland. Ireland has no sworn translators and no official register, so be wary of anyone who promises a ‘Department of Justice approved translator’.
Galway trains translators in two ways: the University of Galway runs an MA in Translation Studies, and its Irish-language academy, Acadamh na hOllscolaíochta Gaeilge, teaches translation into and out of Irish, from a BA in Irish and Translation Studies to an MA in conference interpreting.
Translation degrees and membership of a professional association are a sign of quality, but the immigration rules do not require them. Our credential is membership of the American Translators Association (ATA). For a visa applied for from outside Ireland, a translation made outside the EEA also needs an apostille from the country where it was made.
In Ireland, notaries public are appointed by the Chief Justice, on petition, and in practice they are solicitors. Affidavits and statutory declarations are sworn before a commissioner for oaths or a practising solicitor.
County Galway is also home to An Coimisinéir Teanga, the commissioner who oversees the Official Languages Act, in An Spidéal: state bodies must offer their services in Irish, so a document from the Gaeltacht may come in Irish and need a translation into English or another language.
Irish immigration does not ask for a notary for applications made in Ireland. Our statement of accuracy is signed before a notary public in Florida, USA, at no extra cost (see notarised translation); if an office in Galway asks for an Irish notary, check with them before you order.
Whether the translator works in Galway or online, check that:

No. Ireland has no sworn translators appointed by the State and no official register of translators, and Irish immigration does not approve or list translators or translation companies. What counts is a professional translator and a signed statement of accuracy with the date, the translator’s name and contact details. Be wary of anyone who promises a ‘Department of Justice approved translator’.
No. Irish immigration does not accept translations made by the applicant, and a translation made by a relative is not a good idea either: it has to come from a professional translator, who signs the statement of accuracy with their name and contact details.
For each document that is not in English or Irish, Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) and the Irish embassies ask for a full translation with a statement from the translator that it is accurate, the date, and the translator’s full name, signature and contact details. Translations made by the applicant are not accepted. For citizenship, the translation is uploaded with a copy of the original document. For a visa applied for from outside Ireland, a translation made outside the EEA must also be apostilled in the country where it was made.
By people. Every document is translated by a professional linguist and goes through double human review for accuracy, grammar, formatting and consistency before delivery.
