Where Croatian is spoken and where your translation is accepted

Croatian is the official language of Croatia, one of the three official languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina and, since 2013, an official language of the European Union. It is also a recognized minority language in Serbia, Montenegro, Austria, Hungary and Italy, and it has more than 5 million speakers. Emigration took Croatian to the United States, Canada, Chile, Argentina and Australia, and later to Germany and Austria, where many families still need Croatian records. The destination decides the type of translation.

Croatian translation services for Croatia, Bosnia and the diaspora

Croatian is close to Serbian and Bosnian, and speakers of the three understand each other, but each has its own standard, and documents from Croatia follow their own formats. A good translation follows the language of the original, keeps every letter of the names and reads naturally to whoever receives it.

  • Letters: Croatian uses a Latin alphabet of 30 letters, with č, ć, dž, đ, lj, nj, š and ž, and č and ć are different letters. American documents often drop the marks, so Kovačević becomes Kovacevic. The translation keeps every name exactly as in the original, so tell us the form used in your US documents when you order.
  • Croatian, Serbian and Bosnian: bread is kruh in Croatian and hleb in Serbian, a train is vlak in Croatian and voz in Serbian, and a thousand is tisuća in Croatian and hiljada in Serbian. Croatian is written only in the Latin alphabet, while Serbian also uses Cyrillic, and documents from Bosnia and Herzegovina can come in any of the three languages.
  • Names: many surnames end in -ić, and a surname does not change with gender, so Ivan Horvat and Ana Horvat share the same form. In running text names change their ending with grammatical case, so Ivan Horvat can appear as Ivana Horvata, and the translation keeps the name as it is written in the identity fields of the original.
  • Dates and numbers: the months have their own Slavic names, so listopad is October and prosinac is December, and dates use periods, so 3. listopada 2026. is October 3, 2026. Decimals use a comma and thousands a period, so 1.500,00 is one thousand five hundred.
  • Documents from Croatia: the birth extract (izvadak iz matice rođenih), the marriage extract (izvadak iz matice vjenčanih), the certificate of citizenship (domovnica) and the ID card (osobna iskaznica), which carries the personal identification number (OIB). The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.

The history of the Croatian language

Croatian is a South Slavic language, brought to the Adriatic coast by the Slavs who settled there in the 7th century. It has three dialect groups, named after the word each one uses for “what”: Čakavian (ča), Kajkavian (kaj) and Štokavian (što). One of its oldest records is the Baška tablet, a stone carved around the year 1100 on the island of Krk, in the Glagolitic script.

For centuries Croatian was written in three scripts, Glagolitic, Cyrillic and Latin. The first Croatian printed book, a missal in Glagolitic script, came out in 1483, and Marko Marulić wrote the poem Judita in 1501, printed in 1521. In 1595 Faust Vrančić published in Venice a dictionary of five languages, among them Croatian. In the 1830s, Ljudevit Gaj and the Illyrian movement reformed the Latin spelling, with letters such as č, š and ž, and the written standard was built on Štokavian.

In Yugoslavia the language was officially part of Serbo-Croatian. After Croatia became independent in 1991, Croatian became the name of its official language, and on July 1, 2013, when Croatia joined the European Union, it became an official language of the Union. Today Croatian has more than 5 million speakers, in Croatia, in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in the communities abroad.

Do you translate Croatian from Croatia and Bosnia, and is Croatian the same as Serbian?

We translate documents from Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, such as birth extracts, the certificate of citizenship (domovnica) and ID cards, to and from English, Italian and other languages. Croatian, Serbian and Bosnian are close and mutually understood, but each has its own standard, so the translation follows the language of the original. If your document is in Serbian or in Cyrillic, tell us when you order and we confirm the options before quoting.

A name is spelled differently from my passport. Can you change it?

The translation reproduces names exactly as they appear in the original document. If we made a typo, we fix it at no cost. If the original itself has a different spelling, tell us before we start and we will guide you on how to handle it.

Can you translate between two languages other than English, such as Italian to Portuguese?

Often yes, depending on the pair and the service. For certified translation we confirm translator availability. For sworn translation into Portuguese, some pairs require a two-step route through English. We tell you the option before quoting.

What is a certified translation?

A certified translation is a complete translation signed by a qualified professional, with a statement attesting that it is accurate and complete. In the United States it is the format required by USCIS, courts, universities and most official institutions.

Which documents do you translate?

Birth, marriage and death certificates, divorce decrees, diplomas and transcripts, driver's licenses, passports and IDs, criminal records, bank and financial statements, medical and vaccination records, contracts, affidavits and court documents, among others. Send a photo and we confirm.

Is the translation done by people or by machine?

By people. Every document is translated by a professional linguist and goes through double human review for accuracy, grammar, formatting and consistency before delivery.
