Where Czech is spoken and where your translation is accepted

Czech is the official language of the Czech Republic, also called Czechia, and one of the official languages of the European Union, with more than 10 million speakers in Bohemia, Moravia and Czech Silesia. From the 1850s, emigration took Czech to the United States, where Czech communities grew in Texas, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Chicago, and later to Canada, Austria and Germany, and, after the Czech Republic joined the European Union in 2004, to the United Kingdom. The destination decides the type of translation.

Czech translation services for Bohemia, Moravia and the Czech diaspora

Czech is one language across the Czech Republic, but Bohemia and Moravia have their own everyday forms, and Czech documents follow their own formats. A good translation keeps every letter of the original and reads naturally to whoever receives it.

  • Letters: Czech is written in the Latin alphabet with the háček in č, ř, š, ž and ě, the acute accent in á, é, í, ó, ú and ý and the ring in ů, and ch counts as a single letter. Systems abroad often drop the marks, so Dvořák becomes Dvorak and Plzeň becomes Plzen, and the translation keeps every letter exactly as in the original.
  • Names: most surnames have a female form, so the wife or daughter of Novák is Nováková and the female form of Novotný is Novotná, and some women abroad use the surname without -ová. Czech also changes names inside a sentence, so Petr Novák can appear as Petra Nováka, and Petra is also a woman's name. Tell us the spelling used in your US documents when you order.
  • Regions: in spoken Czech from Bohemia, dobrý (good) often becomes dobrej and mléko (milk) becomes mlíko, and in Brno the tram is called šalina. Official documents always use standard written Czech (spisovná čeština).
  • Dates and numbers: dates are written day, month and year with periods and often spaces, so 3. 10. 2026 is October 3, 2026, and months in words have their own Slavic names, as in 3. října 2026. Decimals use a comma and thousands a space, so 1 500,00 is one thousand five hundred.
  • Documents: the birth certificate (rodný list), the marriage certificate (oddací list) and the ID card (občanský průkaz) carry the birth number (rodné číslo), in which women have 50 added to the month. Documents issued before 1993 often name Czechoslovakia (ČSR, ČSSR or ČSFR). The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.

The history of the Czech language

Czech belongs to the West Slavic branch of the Slavic languages, together with Slovak and Polish. In the 9th century, the missionaries Cyril and Methodius brought Old Church Slavonic to Great Moravia, but Latin soon became the written language of the Church and the state, and the first Czech words appear in Latin documents of the 11th century, such as the founding charter of the Litoměřice chapter. In 1348, Charles IV founded the university of Prague, the oldest in Central Europe.

In the early 15th century, the reformer Jan Hus is credited with the spelling with diacritics still used today, which writes sounds such as č, š and ž with a single letter. The Bible of Kralice, printed between 1579 and 1593, became the model of the written language. After 1620, German dominated the state and the schools, and in the 19th century the Czech National Revival, with Josef Dobrovský and Josef Jungmann, brought Czech back to books, theater and science.

From the 1850s, Czech families emigrated to Texas, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Chicago, and new waves left after 1948 and 1968. Czechoslovakia existed from 1918 to 1992, and on January 1, 1993, the Czech Republic became independent. Today Czech has more than 10 million speakers, and the records of those families are still translated for immigration, citizenship and genealogy.

Do you translate Czech documents from the Czech Republic and the former Czechoslovakia?

Yes. We translate Czech documents from the Czech Republic and records issued in the former Czechoslovakia, such as the birth certificate (rodný list), the marriage certificate (oddací list) and the ID card, to and from English and other languages. We keep every name exactly as in the original, with letters such as ř and ů and the female form of the surname, as in Novák and Nováková.

A name is spelled differently from my passport. Can you change it?

The translation reproduces names exactly as they appear in the original document. If we made a typo, we fix it at no cost. If the original itself has a different spelling, tell us before we start and we will guide you on how to handle it.

Which documents do you translate?

Birth, marriage and death certificates, divorce decrees, diplomas and transcripts, driver's licenses, passports and IDs, criminal records, bank and financial statements, medical and vaccination records, contracts, affidavits and court documents, among others. Send a photo and we confirm.

Is the translation done by people or by machine?

By people. Every document is translated by a professional linguist and goes through double human review for accuracy, grammar, formatting and consistency before delivery.

Can you translate between two languages other than English, such as Italian to Portuguese?

Often yes, depending on the pair and the service. For certified translation we confirm translator availability. For sworn translation into Portuguese, some pairs require a two-step route through English. We tell you the option before quoting.

Can you do a sworn translation from any language into Portuguese?

It depends on the language pair, because a sworn translation requires a public translator registered for that language. For pairs without one, we can offer a two-step route: certified translation into English, then sworn translation from English into Portuguese. We confirm before quoting.
