Where Farsi is spoken and where your translation is accepted

Farsi, also called Persian, is the official language of Iran, one of the two main languages of Afghanistan, where it is called Dari, and the basis of Tajik, the official language of Tajikistan, which is written in the Cyrillic alphabet. It has more than 70 million native speakers. Large communities live in the United States, above all in Los Angeles, and in Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom and Australia. Most Farsi documents we receive are needed in the United States, and the destination decides the type of translation.

Farsi translation services for Iran and Afghanistan

It is one language, but the Farsi of Iran, the Dari of Afghanistan and Tajik differ in accent and vocabulary, and Iranian documents follow their own calendar. A good translation keeps every detail of the original and reads naturally to whoever receives it.

  • Farsi and Dari: they are written the same way but change in everyday words, so hospital is bimarestan in Iran and shafakhana in Afghanistan, and car is mashin in Iran and motar in Afghanistan. The translator follows the variant of the document.
  • Alphabet and numbers: Farsi is written from right to left in the Arabic script, with four letters of its own, پ (p), چ (ch), ژ (zh) and گ (g), and numbers use the Farsi digits ۰۱۲۳۴۵۶۷۸۹. The translation reproduces every figure exactly.
  • Dates: documents from Iran use the Solar Hijri calendar, whose year begins at Nowruz, in March, and whose months have Farsi names, such as Farvardin and Mehr. The year 1405 began in March 2026. The translation reproduces each date exactly as it is in the original.
  • Names: the same name can be written Mohammad, Mohammed or Muhammad, and Hosseini or Hosseyni, in Latin letters. The translation follows the spelling in the passport when there is one, so tell us the form used in your US documents when you order.
  • Documents: from Iran, the birth certificate booklet (shenasnameh), the national ID card (kart-e melli) and the marriage certificate (sanad-e ezdevaj); from Afghanistan, the national ID card (tazkira). The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.

The history of the Farsi language

Farsi, or modern Persian, is an Iranian language of the Indo-European family, and its history has three stages. Old Persian was carved in cuneiform by the Achaemenid kings, and its best known text is the Behistun inscription of Darius I, from about 520 BC. Middle Persian, also called Pahlavi, was the language of the Sasanian Empire, which lasted until the 7th century.

After the Arab conquest, the language took in a large Arabic vocabulary and, from the 9th century, was written in the Arabic script with four extra letters. Ferdowsi finished the Shahnameh, the Book of Kings, around 1010, and Rumi, Saadi and Hafez wrote in Persian in the 13th and 14th centuries. For centuries Persian was a language of courts and letters from Anatolia to India, where it was an official language of the Mughal Empire.

Today the language has more than 70 million native speakers, as Farsi in Iran, Dari in Afghanistan and Tajik in Tajikistan. Emigration from Iran after 1979 and the arrivals from Afghanistan formed large communities in the United States, Canada, Germany and Australia, and their records are translated for immigration, study and work.

Do you translate Farsi and Dari documents, with dates in the Persian solar calendar?

Yes. We translate documents from Iran and Afghanistan, in Farsi, also called Persian, and in Dari, such as the shenasnameh, the national ID card, the tazkira and marriage certificates, to and from English and other languages. Dates in the Solar Hijri calendar are reproduced as they are in the original, and names follow the spelling in the passport when there is one.

A name is spelled differently from my passport. Can you change it?

The translation reproduces names exactly as they appear in the original document. If we made a typo, we fix it at no cost. If the original itself has a different spelling, tell us before we start and we will guide you on how to handle it.

What is a certified translation?

A certified translation is a complete translation signed by a qualified professional, with a statement attesting that it is accurate and complete. In the United States it is the format required by USCIS, courts, universities and most official institutions.

Which documents do you translate?

Birth, marriage and death certificates, divorce decrees, diplomas and transcripts, driver's licenses, passports and IDs, criminal records, bank and financial statements, medical and vaccination records, contracts, affidavits and court documents, among others. Send a photo and we confirm.

Is the translation done by people or by machine?

By people. Every document is translated by a professional linguist and goes through double human review for accuracy, grammar, formatting and consistency before delivery.

Can you translate between two languages other than English, such as Italian to Portuguese?

Often yes, depending on the pair and the service. For certified translation we confirm translator availability. For sworn translation into Portuguese, some pairs require a two-step route through English. We tell you the option before quoting.
