Where Urdu is spoken and where your translation is accepted

Urdu is the national language of Pakistan, where it is official together with English, and one of the 22 languages listed in the Constitution of India, official in several Indian states. About 70 million people speak it as a first language, and more than 200 million speak it in total, because in Pakistan it is the common language of people who grow up speaking Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto or Balochi. Large communities live in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Italy and the Gulf countries, and the destination decides the type of translation.

Urdu translation services for Pakistan and India

Urdu is one language in Pakistan and in India, but it is written in its own script, from right to left, and documents from each country follow their own formats. Many Pakistani records are printed in English with fields filled in Urdu, or in both languages side by side. A good translation keeps every name, date and note of the original and reads naturally to whoever receives it.

  • Script: Urdu is written from right to left in the Perso-Arabic alphabet, in the flowing Nastaliq style, with letters of its own such as ٹ, ڈ, ڑ and ے. Handwritten fields and stamps are read letter by letter, and the translation marks any part that is illegible.
  • Names: the same name can be spelled Muhammad, Mohammad or Muhammed in English, and many people have no fixed family name. Pakistani records identify a person by the father’s or husband’s name, shown as son of (s/o), daughter of (d/o) or wife of (w/o). The translation keeps each name exactly as in the original, so tell us the spelling used in your passport when you order.
  • Dates and numbers: dates are written day, month and year, so 03/10/2026 is October 3, 2026, and a Nikah Nama can also carry the date of the Islamic calendar. Large amounts are grouped in lakhs and crores, so 1,50,000 is one hundred fifty thousand, and the translation writes them in the format of the destination.
  • Documents from Pakistan: the national identity card (CNIC), the child registration certificate (B-Form) and the family registration certificate (FRC) come from NADRA, the birth and death certificates from the Union Council, and the marriage contract is the Nikah Nama. The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.
  • Documents from India: Urdu records from India, such as old certificates and religious marriage documents, follow the format of the issuing state. The receiving authority defines whether the translation needs a certification, a notarization or the apostille on the original.

The history of the Urdu language

Urdu grew out of the speech of the region around Delhi, in northern India, from the 13th century on, when the sultanates and later the Mughal Empire brought Persian, Arabic and Turkic words into the local language. Its name comes from the Turkic word ordu, the army camp, in the expression zaban-e-urdu, the language of the camp. For centuries the same spoken base was called Hindustani, Hindavi or Rekhta.

Urdu poetry flourished in the Deccan with Wali Dakhani, in the late 17th century, and in Delhi and Lucknow with Mir Taqi Mir in the 18th century and Mirza Ghalib in the 19th. Around 1800, Fort William College in Calcutta published some of the first modern prose works in Urdu, and the poet Muhammad Iqbal, in the early 20th century, wrote in Urdu and in Persian.

When Pakistan was founded, in 1947, Urdu became its national language, and the Constitution of 1973 confirmed it. In India it remained one of the languages of the Constitution. Today more than 200 million people speak Urdu, in South Asia and in the communities of the United Kingdom, North America and the Gulf, and their family and immigration records are still translated every day.

Help Center

Turnaround, price, accepted documents and how to order: the most common questions are already answered in the Help Center, organized by topic.

Do you translate Urdu documents from Pakistan and India, such as the Nikah Nama?

Yes. We translate documents from Pakistan and India, such as the CNIC, the B-Form, birth certificates and the Nikah Nama, to and from English and other languages. We keep every name exactly as in the original, including the father’s or husband’s name, so tell us the spelling used in your passport when you order.

A name is spelled differently from my passport. Can you change it?

The translation reproduces names exactly as they appear in the original document. If we made a typo, we fix it at no cost. If the original itself has a different spelling, tell us before we start and we will guide you on how to handle it.

What is a certified translation?

A certified translation is a complete translation signed by a qualified professional, with a statement attesting that it is accurate and complete. In the United States it is the format required by USCIS, courts, universities and most official institutions.

Which documents do you translate?

Birth, marriage and death certificates, divorce decrees, diplomas and transcripts, driver's licenses, passports and IDs, criminal records, bank and financial statements, medical and vaccination records, contracts, affidavits and court documents, among others. Send a photo and we confirm.

Is the translation done by people or by machine?

By people. Every document is translated by a professional linguist and goes through double human review for accuracy, grammar, formatting and consistency before delivery.

Can you do a sworn translation from any language into Portuguese?

It depends on the language pair, because a sworn translation requires a public translator registered for that language. For pairs without one, we can offer a two-step route: certified translation into English, then sworn translation from English into Portuguese. We confirm before quoting.
