Where Pashto is spoken and where your translation is accepted

Pashto, also written Pakhto or Pushto, is one of the two official languages of Afghanistan, alongside Dari, and in Pakistan it is the main language of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and of the north of Balochistan. It has more than 40 million speakers, most of them in these two countries, and large communities in the Gulf, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada and the United States. Since 2021, tens of thousands of Afghan families have resettled in the United States, and most Pashto documents we receive are needed there. The destination decides the type of translation.

Pashto translation services for Afghanistan and Pakistan

Pashto is one language, but the Pashto of Kandahar and the Pashto of Peshawar differ in sounds and in everyday words, and Afghan and Pakistani documents follow different models. A good translation reads every letter of the original and keeps every detail of the record.

  • Alphabet: Pashto is written from right to left in an alphabet based on Arabic script, with more than 40 letters, including letters that Arabic and Persian do not have, such as ټ, ډ, ړ, ښ and څ. The translation reads each one correctly, also in handwritten records.
  • South and North: the Pashto of the South, around Kandahar, and of the North, around Peshawar, differ in some sounds. The letter ښ sounds like sh in Kandahar and like kh in Peshawar, which is why the same language is called Pashto in one region and Pakhto in the other.
  • Names: many Afghans have no family surname, and the tazkira identifies the person by the given name, the father’s name and the grandfather’s name. The same name can be spelled Mohammad, Muhammad or Mohammed in English, so the translation follows the spelling in the passport when there is one; tell us the form used in your US documents when you order.
  • Dates and numbers: Afghan documents carry dates in the Hijri calendars used in Afghanistan, the solar one (hijri shamsi), in which the year 1405 began in March 2026, or the lunar one, and they often write the Eastern Arabic numerals in their Persian form (۰۱۲۳۴۵۶۷۸۹). The translation reproduces each date exactly as it is in the original.
  • Documents: the national ID card (tazkira, تذکره) and its electronic version (e-tazkira), the birth certificate, the marriage certificate and school records follow Afghan national models, and many are printed in Dari and Pashto on the same page. The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.

The history of the Pashto language

Pashto belongs to the Iranian branch of the Indo-European family, the same branch as Persian and Kurdish, and has been spoken for centuries in the mountains and valleys between the Hindu Kush and the Indus River. Over time it took in words from Persian, Arabic and the languages of India, and it came to be written in an adapted Arabic alphabet, with new letters for its own sounds.

In the 17th century, Khushal Khan Khattak, a tribal chief and poet, wrote hundreds of poems in Pashto, and Rahman Baba, a Sufi poet from the region of Peshawar, wrote verses that are still recited today. In 1747, Ahmad Shah Durrani founded the state that became modern Afghanistan, and he also wrote poetry in Pashto.

In the 20th century, Pashto became a language of the Afghan state, and the 1964 constitution named Pashto and Dari the official languages of Afghanistan. Today Pashto has more than 40 million speakers, and the communities that formed in the Gulf, in Europe and in North America still need their documents translated for immigration, study and work.

Help Center

Turnaround, price, accepted documents and how to order: the most common questions are already answered in the Help Center, organized by topic.

Do you translate Pashto documents from Afghanistan, such as the tazkira?

Yes. We translate documents from Afghanistan and Pakistan, such as the tazkira, birth and marriage certificates and school records, to and from English and other languages. Names follow the spelling in the passport when there is one, and dates in the Hijri calendar are reproduced as they are in the original. If the document is in Dari and Pashto, tell us when you order.

A name is spelled differently from my passport. Can you change it?

The translation reproduces names exactly as they appear in the original document. If we made a typo, we fix it at no cost. If the original itself has a different spelling, tell us before we start and we will guide you on how to handle it.

What is a certified translation?

A certified translation is a complete translation signed by a qualified professional, with a statement attesting that it is accurate and complete. In the United States it is the format required by USCIS, courts, universities and most official institutions.

Which documents do you translate?

Birth, marriage and death certificates, divorce decrees, diplomas and transcripts, driver's licenses, passports and IDs, criminal records, bank and financial statements, medical and vaccination records, contracts, affidavits and court documents, among others. Send a photo and we confirm.

Is the translation done by people or by machine?

By people. Every document is translated by a professional linguist and goes through double human review for accuracy, grammar, formatting and consistency before delivery.

Can you translate between two languages other than English, such as Italian to Portuguese?

Often yes, depending on the pair and the service. For certified translation we confirm translator availability. For sworn translation into Portuguese, some pairs require a two-step route through English. We tell you the option before quoting.
