Irish Translation Services

Roxo Translations offers Irish translation services for documents in Irish (Gaeilge), the Celtic language of Ireland, to and from English, Italian, Russian and Arabic. Irish is not the English spoken in Ireland: it is a language of its own. Every translation is done by a human translator, native in the target language, and reviewed by a second one, never by machine translation.

Where Irish is spoken and where your translation is accepted

Irish (Gaeilge) is a Celtic language. The Constitution of Ireland, of 1937, makes it the national language and the first official language of the country, with English as the second, and it has been an official language of the European Union since 2007. In Northern Ireland it was officially recognized in 2022. It is spoken every day in the Gaeltacht, the Irish-speaking areas in parts of Donegal, Mayo, Galway, Kerry, Cork and Waterford, and in the 2022 census almost 1.9 million people in Ireland said they could speak it. In practice, most documents from Ireland are issued in English, or in English and Irish side by side, so tell us which language your document is in. The destination decides the type of translation.

Irish translation services for Ireland and Northern Ireland

Irish is close to Scottish Gaelic and Manx, and it has three main dialects, from Ulster, Connacht and Munster, but official documents follow the official standard spelling. A good translation follows the Irish of the original, keeps every letter of the names and reads naturally to whoever receives it.

  • Irish or English: many documents from Ireland, such as the birth certificate, are bilingual, with the headings in Irish and English and the entries in English. In that case the translation is made from the English text, and a document written only in English needs a translation from English, not from Irish. Send the document as it is and we tell you before quoting.
  • Letters: Irish uses the Latin alphabet with the long accent (síneadh fada) on á, é, í, ó and ú, and the accent changes the meaning, so Seán is a name and sean means old. American documents often drop the accent, so Seán becomes Sean and Siobhán becomes Siobhan. The translation keeps every name exactly as in the original, so tell us the form used in your US documents when you order.
  • Names: surnames change with gender, so a man is Ó Briain or Mac Mathúna and a woman is Ní Bhriain or Nic Mhathúna, and the same family may appear in English as O'Brien or McMahon. The translation never adapts a name: it keeps the spelling of the original, and differences between your documents are something to point out when you order. Proper names are not translated: in a document translation, Michael stays Michael and Mícheál stays Mícheál, as in the original.
  • Places, dates and numbers: places have an Irish name of their own, so Dublin is Baile Átha Cliath, Cork is Corcaigh and Galway is Gaillimh, and in the Gaeltacht the official place names are in Irish only. Dates come in day, month and year order, with the months in Irish, as in 3 Deireadh Fómhair 2026, which is October 3, 2026, and decimals use a point, as in English.
  • Documents from Ireland: the birth certificate (teastas breithe), the marriage certificate (teastas pósta), the Leaving Certificate (Ardteistiméireacht), which can be taken through Irish, school reports from Irish-medium schools (Gaelscoileanna) and documents from Gaeltacht bodies. The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.

The history of the Irish language

Irish is a Celtic language of the Goidelic branch, the same as Scottish Gaelic and Manx. Its oldest records are ogham inscriptions, carved as lines along the edges of standing stones from around the 4th to the 6th centuries. In the 8th and 9th centuries Irish monks wrote notes in Old Irish in the margins of Latin manuscripts, some of them kept today in libraries in continental Europe.

One of the oldest manuscripts written entirely in Irish, the Book of the Dun Cow (Lebor na hUidre), dates from around 1100. For centuries Irish was the language of most of the island, but English rule, the Great Famine of 1845 to 1852 and emigration, much of it to the United States, reduced the number of speakers, above all in the west. In 1893 the Gaelic League (Conradh na Gaeilge) was founded to revive the language, and one of its founders, Douglas Hyde, became the first President of Ireland in 1938.

The Constitution of 1937 made Irish the first official language, and the official standard (An Caighdeán Oifigiúil), published in 1958, fixed the spelling and grammar, while the old Gaelic type gave way to the Roman type used today. The Official Languages Act of 2003 gave the public the right to deal with the state in Irish, it became an official language of the European Union in 2007, and today it is a compulsory subject in most schools in Ireland and the everyday language of the Gaeltacht.

Do you translate documents in Irish (Gaeilge), or only the documents in English from Ireland?

We translate documents in Irish, the Celtic language of Ireland, to and from English, Italian, Russian and Arabic, such as Leaving Certificate results taken through Irish, school reports from Irish-medium schools (Gaelscoileanna) and documents from the Gaeltacht. Most documents from Ireland come in English, or in English and Irish side by side, and in that case the translation is made from the English text. Send the document as it is and we confirm the options before quoting.

A name is spelled differently from my passport. Can you change it?

The translation reproduces names exactly as they appear in the original document. If we made a typo, we fix it at no cost. If the original itself has a different spelling, tell us before we start and we will guide you on how to handle it.

Can you translate between two languages other than English, such as Italian to Portuguese?

Often yes, depending on the pair and the service. For certified translation we confirm translator availability. For sworn translation into Portuguese, some pairs require a two-step route through English. We tell you the option before quoting.

Can you do a sworn translation from any language into Portuguese?

It depends on the language pair, because a sworn translation requires a public translator registered for that language. For pairs without one, we can offer a two-step route: certified translation into English, then sworn translation from English into Portuguese. We confirm before quoting.

Which documents do you translate?

Birth, marriage and death certificates, divorce decrees, diplomas and transcripts, driver's licenses, passports and IDs, criminal records, bank and financial statements, medical and vaccination records, contracts, affidavits and court documents, among others. Send a photo and we confirm.

Is the translation done by people or by machine?

By people. Every document is translated by a professional linguist and goes through double human review for accuracy, grammar, formatting and consistency before delivery.
