Where Bulgarian is spoken and where your translation is accepted

Bulgarian is the official language of Bulgaria and, since Bulgaria joined the European Union on January 1, 2007, an official language of the Union, which made Cyrillic its third alphabet, after Latin and Greek. It is also spoken by historic Bulgarian communities in Moldova, Ukraine, Romania and Serbia, and it has more than 7 million speakers. After 1989, and even more after 2007, many families moved to Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States, where they still need their Bulgarian records translated. The destination decides the type of translation.

Bulgarian translation services: Cyrillic, names and the EGN

Bulgarian is written in Cyrillic, like Russian, but it is a different language, with its own letters, its own grammar and documents in formats of their own. A good translation reads the original as Bulgarian, writes every name the way the passport does and keeps every number of the original.

  • Alphabet: Bulgarian Cyrillic has 30 letters, and since 2009 a law sets how they are written in Latin letters, so Ж is zh, Щ is sht and Ъ, a vowel, is a, which makes Търново read Tarnovo. Older passports may spell the same name differently, so Цветан can be Tzvetan or Tsvetan. The translation follows the spelling of your passport, so tell us the form used in your US documents when you order.
  • Bulgarian and Russian: the two share the alphabet but not the reading, since Щ is sht in Bulgarian and shch in Russian, and Bulgarian has no letters Ы and Э. Bulgarian nouns have no grammatical cases and take the article at the end of the word, so книга is a book and книгата is the book. A Bulgarian document is translated as Bulgarian, never read as if it were Russian.
  • Names: a full name has a first name, a middle name made from the father’s first name and a surname, as in Ivan Georgiev Petrov, son of Georgi. Women take a feminine ending, so his sister is Maria Georgieva Petrova. The middle name looks like a surname, and the translation keeps each part in its own field, so forms in the United States do not read it as a second last name.
  • Dates and numbers: dates are written day, month and year with periods, so 03.10.2026 is October 3, 2026, often followed by г., short for year, and the months have their own names, so октомври is October. Decimals use a comma and thousands a space, so 1 500,00 is one thousand five hundred.
  • Documents from Bulgaria: the birth certificate (udostoverenie za razhdane), the marriage certificate (udostoverenie za grazhdanski brak), the ID card (lichna karta), the criminal record certificate (svidetelstvo za sadimost) and the diploma with its supplement of subjects and grades. Most of them carry the personal number (EGN, ЕГН), with 10 digits, the first six taken from the date of birth. The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.

The history of the Bulgarian language

Bulgarian is a South Slavic language and the heir of Old Church Slavonic, the first written Slavic language. Bulgaria adopted Christianity in 864, and in 886 Clement and Naum, disciples of Saints Cyril and Methodius, arrived there with the Glagolitic alphabet the brothers had created. At the end of the 9th century the Cyrillic alphabet was developed in the First Bulgarian Empire, and in 893 the Council of Preslav made Slavonic the language of church and state. Bulgaria still celebrates the alphabet and its culture every May 24.

From the end of the 14th century to 1878 Bulgaria was under Ottoman rule, and books in Bulgarian were copied in monasteries. In 1762 Paisius of Hilendar wrote his Slavonic-Bulgarian History, a starting point of the National Revival. The Nedelnik of Sofronius of Vratsa, from 1806, is counted as the first printed book in modern Bulgarian, and the Fish Primer of Petar Beron, from 1824, taught generations to read. The spelling reform of 1945 removed letters such as ѣ and ѫ and set the 30 letters used today.

After 1989 many Bulgarians emigrated, and on January 1, 2007, Bulgaria joined the European Union, bringing Bulgarian and the Cyrillic alphabet into its official texts. Today Bulgarian has more than 7 million speakers, in Bulgaria and in the communities abroad, and those families still need their records translated for immigration, study and work.

Do you translate Bulgarian documents from Bulgaria, and how are names written in Latin letters?

Yes. We translate documents from Bulgaria and from the Bulgarian communities abroad, such as birth certificates, ID cards and diplomas, to and from English, Italian, Russian and Arabic. Names are written in Latin letters as in your passport, which follows the official Bulgarian transliteration, and the translation keeps the personal number (EGN) and every stamp of the original.

A name is spelled differently from my passport. Can you change it?

The translation reproduces names exactly as they appear in the original document. If we made a typo, we fix it at no cost. If the original itself has a different spelling, tell us before we start and we will guide you on how to handle it.

Is the translation done by people or by machine?

By people. Every document is translated by a professional linguist and goes through double human review for accuracy, grammar, formatting and consistency before delivery.

Can you translate between two languages other than English, such as Italian to Portuguese?

Often yes, depending on the pair and the service. For certified translation we confirm translator availability. For sworn translation into Portuguese, some pairs require a two-step route through English. We tell you the option before quoting.

Which documents do you translate?

Birth, marriage and death certificates, divorce decrees, diplomas and transcripts, driver's licenses, passports and IDs, criminal records, bank and financial statements, medical and vaccination records, contracts, affidavits and court documents, among others. Send a photo and we confirm.

What is a certified translation?

A certified translation is a complete translation signed by a qualified professional, with a statement attesting that it is accurate and complete. In the United States it is the format required by USCIS, courts, universities and most official institutions.
