Where Slovak is spoken and where your translation is accepted

Slovak is the official language of Slovakia and one of the official languages of the European Union, with more than 5 million speakers. It is also one of the official languages of the province of Vojvodina, in Serbia, and is spoken by Slovak minorities in Hungary, the Czech Republic and Romania. From the 1880s, emigration took Slovak to the United States, where Slovak communities grew in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois and New Jersey, and later to Canada, and, after Slovakia joined the European Union in 2004, to the United Kingdom and Ireland. The destination decides the type of translation.

Slovak translation services for Slovakia, Czechoslovakia and the Slovak diaspora

Slovak is one language across Slovakia, close to Czech but with its own letters, words and spelling, and Slovak documents follow their own formats. A good translation keeps every letter of the original and reads naturally to whoever receives it.

  • Letters: Slovak is written in the Latin alphabet with marks of its own, such as ä, ô, ľ, ĺ and ŕ, besides č, š, ž, ď, ť and ň, and ch, dz and dž count as single letters. Systems abroad often drop the marks, so Ľudovít Štúr becomes Ludovit Stur and Žilina becomes Zilina, and the translation keeps every letter exactly as in the original.
  • Names: most surnames have a female form, so the wife or daughter of Kováč is Kováčová and the female form of Malý is Malá, and some women abroad use the surname without -ová. Records from before 1918 were often kept in Hungarian or Latin, so the same family may appear as Kovács. Tell us the spelling used in your US documents when you order.
  • Regions: Slovak has western, central and eastern dialects, and the written standard, codified in the 19th century, is based on the central ones. In the east, around Košice and Prešov, speech puts the stress on the second-to-last syllable, not on the first. Official documents always use standard written Slovak (spisovná slovenčina).
  • Dates and numbers: dates are written day, month and year with periods and often spaces, so 3. 10. 2026 is October 3, 2026, and months in words have names close to the English ones, as in 3. októbra 2026. Decimals use a comma and thousands a space, so 1 500,00 is one thousand five hundred.
  • Documents: the birth certificate (rodný list), the marriage certificate (sobášny list) and the ID card (občiansky preukaz) carry the birth number (rodné číslo), in which women have 50 added to the month. Documents issued before 1993 often name Czechoslovakia (ČSSR or ČSFR), and older ones the Kingdom of Hungary, with towns such as Pozsony for Bratislava and Kassa for Košice. The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.

The history of the Slovak language

Slovak belongs to the West Slavic branch of the Slavic languages, together with Czech and Polish, and it is the closest language to Czech. In 863, the missionaries Cyril and Methodius arrived in Great Moravia, which covered much of today's Slovakia, and brought Old Church Slavonic to the region. From the 11th century until 1918, the lands of Slovakia belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary, where Latin was the language of the state and the Church for centuries, and Slovak Protestants wrote in the Czech of the Bible of Kralice.

In 1787, the priest Anton Bernolák published the first codification of written Slovak, based on the western dialects. In 1843, Ľudovít Štúr and his circle chose the central dialects as the basis of the written language, and in 1851 a reform by Martin Hattala gave it a form close to the one used today. The Matica slovenská, founded in 1863 in Martin, published Slovak books and became a center of the national culture.

From the 1880s, hundreds of thousands of Slovaks emigrated to the mines and steel mills of Pennsylvania, to Cleveland and to Chicago. Czechoslovakia existed from 1918 to 1992, and on January 1, 1993, Slovakia became independent. Today Slovak has more than 5 million speakers, and the records of those families, many written in Hungarian or Latin, are still translated for immigration, citizenship and genealogy.

Help Center

Turnaround, price, accepted documents and how to order: the most common questions are already answered in the Help Center, organized by topic.

Do you translate Slovak documents from Slovakia and the former Czechoslovakia?

Yes. We translate Slovak documents from Slovakia and records issued in the former Czechoslovakia, such as the birth certificate (rodný list), the marriage certificate (sobášny list) and the ID card, to and from English and other languages. We keep every name exactly as in the original, with letters such as ľ and ô and the female form of the surname, as in Kováč and Kováčová.

A name is spelled differently from my passport. Can you change it?

The translation reproduces names exactly as they appear in the original document. If we made a typo, we fix it at no cost. If the original itself has a different spelling, tell us before we start and we will guide you on how to handle it.

Which documents do you translate?

Birth, marriage and death certificates, divorce decrees, diplomas and transcripts, driver's licenses, passports and IDs, criminal records, bank and financial statements, medical and vaccination records, contracts, affidavits and court documents, among others. Send a photo and we confirm.

Can you translate between two languages other than English, such as Italian to Portuguese?

Often yes, depending on the pair and the service. For certified translation we confirm translator availability. For sworn translation into Portuguese, some pairs require a two-step route through English. We tell you the option before quoting.

Can you do a sworn translation from any language into Portuguese?

It depends on the language pair, because a sworn translation requires a public translator registered for that language. For pairs without one, we can offer a two-step route: certified translation into English, then sworn translation from English into Portuguese. We confirm before quoting.

Can I use a certified translation outside the United States?

It depends on the destination country and the receiving agency. Some accept a US certified translation, others require a local sworn translator or an apostille. Tell us the country and the institution, and we confirm which format it accepts before quoting.
