Where Danish is spoken and where your translation is accepted

Danish is the official language of Denmark, an official language of the Faroe Islands, together with Faroese, and a language widely used in Greenland, in administration and in schools, next to Greenlandic. It is also a recognized minority language in Schleswig-Holstein, in the north of Germany, and it has been an official language of the European Union since 1973. It has more than 5 million speakers. Between the middle of the 19th century and the early 20th century, hundreds of thousands of Danes emigrated to the United States, many of them to the Midwest and to Utah, and their descendants still look for Danish family records. The destination decides the type of translation.

Danish translation services for Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands

Written Danish is very close to Norwegian Bokmål, and many readers of one understand the other, but documents from Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands follow their own formats and their own official terms. A good translation follows the Danish of the original, keeps every letter of the names and reads naturally to whoever receives it.

  • Letters: Danish uses the Latin alphabet with three more letters, æ, ø and å, which come after z. American documents often drop or replace them, so Søren becomes Soren and Ærø becomes Aero. Some names and places keep the old spelling aa for å, as in Aalborg. The translation keeps every name exactly as in the original, so tell us the form used in your US documents when you order.
  • Greenland and the Faroe Islands: many documents from Greenland come in Greenlandic and Danish side by side, and documents from the Faroe Islands may come in Faroese, Danish or both. We translate from the Danish text; if your document is only in Greenlandic or Faroese, tell us when you order and we confirm the options before quoting.
  • Names: many surnames end in -sen, such as Jensen, Nielsen and Hansen, a trace of the old patronymics, which became fixed family names after a decree of 1828. In the United States some families changed them to Jenson or Hanson. The translation never adapts a name: it keeps the spelling of the original, and differences between your documents are something to point out when you order.
  • Dates and numbers: documents write dates in day, month and year order, with a period after the day, so 3. oktober 2026 or 03.10.2026 is October 3, 2026, and the months are lowercase. Decimals use a comma and thousands a period, so 1.500,00 is one thousand five hundred. The personal identification number (CPR-nummer) begins with the date of birth.
  • Documents from Denmark: the birth and name certificate (fødsels- og navneattest), usually issued by the parish of the Church of Denmark, the marriage certificate (vielsesattest), the certificate of residence (bopælsattest) and the degree certificate (eksamensbevis). The translation reproduces every stamp, seal and note.

The history of the Danish language

Danish is a North Germanic language, descended from Old Norse, the language of Scandinavia in the Viking Age, through its eastern branch. Its oldest records are runic inscriptions, and the Jelling stones, raised in Jutland in the 10th century, one of them by King Harald Bluetooth, are often called the birth certificate of Denmark.

In the Middle Ages Danish began to be written in the Latin alphabet, and the Jutlandic Law (Jyske Lov), of 1241, is one of its oldest texts. The Bible of Christian III, the first complete Bible in Danish, came out in 1550 and became a model for the written standard. Norway was united with Denmark until 1814, and for centuries Danish was the written language there too, which is why written Norwegian is still so close to it. In the 19th century the tales of Hans Christian Andersen took Danish to readers all over the world.

A spelling reform in 1948 introduced the letter å in place of aa and ended the capital letters on common nouns, so Huset became huset. The Danish Language Council (Dansk Sprognævn), founded in 1955, publishes the official spelling dictionary (Retskrivningsordbogen). Since 1968 every resident has a CPR number, and today Danish has more than 5 million speakers, in Denmark, in Greenland, in the Faroe Islands and in the communities abroad.

Help Center

Turnaround, price, accepted documents and how to order: the most common questions are already answered in the Help Center, organized by topic.

Do you translate Danish from Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands?

We translate documents from Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands, such as the birth and name certificate (fødsels- og navneattest), marriage certificates and degree certificates, to and from English, Italian, Russian and Arabic. Many documents from Greenland and the Faroe Islands come with a Danish text next to Greenlandic or Faroese, and we translate from the Danish. If your document is only in Greenlandic or Faroese, tell us when you order and we confirm the options before quoting.

A name is spelled differently from my passport. Can you change it?

The translation reproduces names exactly as they appear in the original document. If we made a typo, we fix it at no cost. If the original itself has a different spelling, tell us before we start and we will guide you on how to handle it.

Can you translate between two languages other than English, such as Italian to Portuguese?

Often yes, depending on the pair and the service. For certified translation we confirm translator availability. For sworn translation into Portuguese, some pairs require a two-step route through English. We tell you the option before quoting.

Can you do a sworn translation from any language into Portuguese?

It depends on the language pair, because a sworn translation requires a public translator registered for that language. For pairs without one, we can offer a two-step route: certified translation into English, then sworn translation from English into Portuguese. We confirm before quoting.

Which documents do you translate?

Birth, marriage and death certificates, divorce decrees, diplomas and transcripts, driver's licenses, passports and IDs, criminal records, bank and financial statements, medical and vaccination records, contracts, affidavits and court documents, among others. Send a photo and we confirm.

Is the translation done by people or by machine?

By people. Every document is translated by a professional linguist and goes through double human review for accuracy, grammar, formatting and consistency before delivery.
