Where Calgary asks for a certified translation

Calgary is the largest city in Alberta. When a document is not in English or French, these are the offices that most often ask for a translation:

  • IRCC, for permanent residence, Express Entry, study and work permits and citizenship, by online application
  • Registry agent offices, for the marriage licence
  • Registry agent offices, for the exchange of a foreign driver’s licence
  • Alberta Vital Statistics, through registry agents, for Alberta birth, marriage and death certificates
  • The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program, Alberta courts, the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University, banks, employers and landlords

IRCC, and the offices in Calgary with rules of their own

For IRCC, a translation by a translator who is not certified in Canada is accepted when it comes with the translator’s affidavit, sworn before a notary public outside Canada, and a certified copy of the original. That is our IRCC translation.

In Alberta, the driver’s licence, identity documents and the marriage licence go through registry agents, and documents not in English must come with a written translation from an approved translator on the province’s list. For the marriage licence, a divorce document not in English must be translated, and the registry agent sets the translation requirements. The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program asks for a certified translation and points applicants to ATIA.

Check with the registry agent or the AAIP before you order: they may ask for a translator on Alberta’s list or certified by ATIA, and Roxo is not a member of ATIA.

Brazilians and Spanish speakers in Calgary

Calgary had 430,640 immigrants in the 2021 census, 33.3% of its population. Punjabi, Tagalog, Mandarin and Cantonese are the non-official languages most spoken at home, and Spanish comes next, with 18,095 people. 2,010 residents were born in Brazil, 4,895 in Mexico and 5,865 in Colombia, and 4,065 have Portuguese as their mother tongue.

For a Canadian document going to Brazil, such as a birth or marriage certificate to be registered at a Brazilian registry office, the translation must be the Brazilian sworn translation (tradução juramentada), done by a sworn translator in Brazil. We provide that too.

Did you know? Calgary

Calgary speaks a lot of Spanish: 29,175 Calgarians have Spanish as their mother tongue, far more than the 16,735 in Vancouver, and more of its immigrants were born in Colombia than in Mexico.

In Calgary, as across Alberta, marriage licences, driver’s licences and birth certificates are not handled at a government counter but by registry agent offices, which add their own service fee to the government fee.

Do you do certified translations for Canada?

Yes. We translate your documents into English with a certificate of accuracy and the translator’s affidavit, sworn before a Florida notary public, the format Canada accepts for translations done outside the country. The deadline is the same as our certified translation in the United States.

What does IRCC require for translated documents?

For each document that is not in English or French, IRCC asks for the translation, an affidavit from the translator and a certified copy of the original. The affidavit is not needed when the translator is a member in good standing of a professional translation association, in Canada or abroad. IRCC does not approve or list translation companies.

Does IRCC accept translations done outside Canada?

Yes. The rule accepts a translator who is a member of a professional association in Canada or abroad, or a translation with the translator’s affidavit sworn before a notary public outside Canada. That is the Roxo format: the affidavit is sworn before a Florida notary public.

Does IRCC require a notarized translation?

IRCC asks for an affidavit from the translator, sworn before someone authorized to take oaths; outside Canada, that is a notary public. Our translations for Canada include the translator’s affidavit, sworn before a Florida notary public, at no extra cost.

How will I receive my translation? Can I print it?

You receive a non-editable PDF by email, with the certification, signatures and digital seals. You can print it freely. If you cannot open the file, we resend it on WhatsApp.
