A certified translator in Charlottetown is a member of a translators’ association from another province: Prince Edward Island has no association of its own among the provincial associations of CTTIC, the national council. For IRCC you can also use a translator who is not certified in Canada, when the translation comes with the translator’s affidavit sworn before a notary public outside Canada, which is how we work: online, with the translation sent by email.
For IRCC, no. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada accepts a translation by a member of a professional association in Canada or abroad, or a translation with the translator’s affidavit sworn before a notary public outside Canada, with a certified copy of the original. It does not ask for a translator in Charlottetown.
Prince Edward Island has no translators’ association of its own and no translation degree that we could confirm. The University of Prince Edward Island teaches translation courses within its French and Spanish programmes, such as Traduction: anglais-français and Practical Translation.
Some offices in the city ask for more, such as the marriage licence and some courts. Roxo is not a member of any Canadian association: our credential is membership of the American Translators Association (ATA). If an office asks for a translator certified in Canada, check with them before you order.
In Prince Edward Island, by the Notaries and Commissioners Act, every lawyer who is a member of the Law Society of Prince Edward Island is a notary public, and the Minister can appoint other notaries. Lawyers, judges and some officials are commissioners by virtue of their office, and every notary public is also a commissioner.
IRCC asks for the affidavit to be sworn before a notary public outside Canada when the translator is not certified in Canada. Ours is sworn before a notary public in Florida, USA, at no extra cost (see notarized translation). If an office in Charlottetown asks for a Prince Edward Island notary, check with them before you order.

In Canada, a certified translator is a translator certified by a provincial association, such as ATIO in Ontario or OTTIAQ in Quebec; in Ontario the title is reserved by law. For IRCC you do not need one: IRCC also accepts a translation with the translator’s affidavit sworn before a notary public outside Canada. Some provincial offices, courts and city offices may ask for a translator certified in the province, so check their instructions. Roxo is not a member of any Canadian association.
No. IRCC does not approve, accredit or list translators or translation companies. It sets the format: a translator who is a member of a professional association, or a translation with the translator’s affidavit. Be wary of anyone who promises an “IRCC-approved translator”.
Yes. The rule accepts a translator who is a member of a professional association in Canada or abroad, or a translation with the translator’s affidavit sworn before a notary public outside Canada. That is the Roxo format: the affidavit is sworn before a Florida notary public.
No. IRCC does not accept translations done by the applicant or by a family member, such as parents, children, spouse or partner, siblings, grandparents, uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and first cousins, even when the relative is a translator.
By people. Every document is translated by a professional linguist and goes through double human review for accuracy, grammar, formatting and consistency before delivery.
